I know, which is why i specified that i had played with him more recently than July

"although his stlye of play is what leads KKF to the incoorect conclusion that his game has tons of holes. "

This implies that KKF made a mistake with his reasoning, whereas he didn't as he was merely giving the facts from Jun. By all accounts samoleus is much improved now and his play has totally changed.

Ok, I'm done now

Read most of what you wrote. With a new child coming (and even without one coming) my number one concern would be health insurance, not on going legality of poker.

I would keep the job if it is enjoyable. If you could drop to part time, even at the expense of some benefits (e.g. you having to pay the entire insurance cost vice the subsidized cost), that would be ideal. Alternately, going back for a PhD might be worth looking into. Were I you, I would be focussed on keeping my options open and my health insurance with a group. (The PhD route is particularly appealing to me personally, and I think you can swing the insurance through a university group, but I have not investigated this fully yet.)

If your wife is working, has health benefits, and will be going back to work after the baby arrives, then I would say go for it BUT wait until she has been back at work for at least a month. (Maybe you could take a leave of absense if she goes back to work; maternity (and paternity) can change your outlook a lot, and even if she is planning on returning to work, that may be something she decides she would rather not do).

fnord, my wife carries our health insurance. however, she is planning on not going back to work for about a year. i was planning on paying for health insurance out of pocket during that time. do you not think that is a good idea?

again, I am quite surprised about this June/July bit; although my game has indeed improved over time (as anyone's will), I have been a big winner since way before June/July ... (by the way, I was punketty then, not samoleus)

I am just curious, why you dont play the SHed games at UB $50/100 where your style would seem to work well?

Kane that is a very good question. I have indeed played those games as well as the short games up to $100-200 on Gaming Club. However, the fact of the matter is that although I have won in those games, my win rate is higher four-tabling on Party - where the caliber of player is much weaker.

The $6M in winnings is a part I did not see (assuming it is in there since KKF said it was).

I am extremely risk averse when it comes to health insurance. My wife is a cancer survivor (Hodgkins) and has a strong history of breast cancer in her family. Also, I have two daughters. I really like being in a group plan since you basicly cannot get dropped. I'm sure you can handle everything with your nest egg, but I would really square away health insurance before making the move. (By square away I mean mitigate the risk of getting dropped/facing a huge increase in cost if something bad happens). I really don't know what health insurers can legally do if say, god forbid, someone in your family was diagnosed with an extremely costly ongoing condition. That sort of thing terrifies me, and I am a pretty risk tollerant individual.

fnord, you are giving me a lot to think about. If I obtain insurance out of pocket, am I liable to have it dropped? what causes one to get dropped or rates to raise? do you know how self-employed people handle this? do you have a rough idea about how much it would cost on a monthly basis to support a family? ... I don't think I would be willing to undergo this endeavor if it meant the potential loss of health insurance. Any chance you could expand on this?

Mostly 10 handed, but i'm sure some of it was shorter as well. To be honest Kane, i don't use stats when i play NL so i don't know his. From observation, i would guess he's something like 35/14, but thats totally out of my ass. I think most people who are not regs in the game start playing too many hands against him (like in sklansky's post) Basically, i think he is a good player because he consistently and sucessfully makes money employing a strategy that not many people could pull off. Furthermore, just from reading his OP, it should be obvious that hs is very aware of his image, opponents, etc... and can probably adapt appropriately in different games.
