You might be interested in some of these courses from The Teaching Company. I haven't listened to any of the music ones, but the several history and philosophy courses I've gotten have been amazing.

I just bookmarked the site's home page. This is something I need to look at, but with my lifestyle and level of general ignorance it might be the sort of thing that might work best in my car.

I have How to Listen to and Understand Great Music and How to Listen to and Understand Opera. Both are beyond fantastic. Highest recommendation.

I would like to learn to train dogs for narcotics detection.

[/ QUOTE ]

This isn't going to be an easy thing to do if you don't have an excellent understanding of some more basic dog training theory and practices. If you do have that foundation, any information on training scent detection dogs would be applicable to narcotics detection. You could try this video. I have personally never seen this particular video, but most of the leerburg videos are good.

Any recommendations for general health/nutrition books? I'm looking for something that explains the how the body works (i.e. how certain types of fat effect the body, what happens in the muscles during aerobic fitness, etc.).

I recently ordered a handful of their courses, mostly philosophy and history. I highly recommend them.

I can't speak specifically to their fine arts stuff.

I think the one on Great Music would go nicely with my favorite boxed wine and the one on Opera would add an intersting flavor to the days I enjoy a bottle of "Two Buck Chuck".

I've heard really good things about Naked Economics: Undressing the Dismal Science. I'll probably read that, but I'm mostly interested in microeconomics. Any recommendations?

[/ QUOTE ]

i was going to mention this book,i really can't recommend it highly enough.

before i read it,i had dipped into several other books which purported to be aimed at beginners interested in learning the basics, and i couldn't finish any of them.

this one however, was a great read from start to finish, really well written and explained, and so far as i can tell, written by a reputable economist and well regarded,so i presume it wasn't dumbed down too much.

after reading it i was having a conversation with my dad in which i was trying to explain a concept from it,and i gave him the book to read the relevant chapter.he would have absolutely no interest in economics whatsoever, and for all his life he avoided the whole area(despite being an avid reader),but as soon as he picked up the book he was hooked,he read it in a few days and is now re-reading it.

i'm sure many of the posters here who have studied economics will recommend other more significant/well known books, but for people who have no prior knowledge of the field, this book would be ideal.

This is a book that talks about how economic thought evolved throughout history. It also has biographies of different economists and gives you a general idea of their contributions to economics.

[/ QUOTE ]

LOL, this book is required reading in my History of Economic Thought class. Like much of the mainstream literature it gives very short shrift to the Austrians, but it's still an interesting read.
