This is highly dependent on where you live. In CA, 1.4 Million is enough to live in a terrible area and never do anything.

Keep in mind my calc adjust for ~20-30 years retirement. You'd likely be cutting it with 20k-30k a year if you were trying to retire ~30 and have a huge RoR.
