Well I think apologizing for slavery really has no point. It is a meaningless gesture. As far as reparations go, I personally have mixed feelings. I think individual payments to African Americans would be a terrible idea for many reasons, but I for one think that not enough has been done to really make an effort to combat the problems caused by slavery and subsequent segregation and mistreatment of blacks.

If you don't think that cultural and economic differences between whites and blacks in this country can be traced, at least partially, to the lingering effects of slavery and subsequent racist policies, you're either ignorant or an idiot.
(And I use 'you' in the general sense here, I am using quick reply so it's not directed at any poster in particular.) Now, the question of what, if anything, should be done, or whether there is equality of opportunity today, is very different. But to suggest that segregation and Jim Crow are not still relevant, when many of the people holding elective office today were alive to see it or, in a few rare cases, participated in the process, is absolutely absurd. There is no other word for it. Absurd. Society doesn't completely change overnight, or even over a generation. |

So, the Virginia legislature passes a resolution which expresses "profound regret" for the institution of slavery. Well, that's mighty white of 'em!
Rather than pass meaningless resolutions about wrongs committed by politicians and suffered by victims long dead, how about expressing "profound regret" for the enslavement perpetrated by the current government? Even better, if they are so concerned about the civil liberties of Virginians, why not actually repeal all the oppressive laws currently on the books? That would be a much more substantive measure to Virginians of all races than this hollow resolution. |

[ QUOTE ]
Without slavery there are NO black people in America.... and who wouldn't agree (besides a true racist) that such a thing would be to the detriment of our country? [/ QUOTE ]I come to your hometown and kill your grandparents. In fact, I kill a lot of your town's elders which includes your parents. Then I take all the remaining young people including you to Tajikistan and sell you for $1,000 to a nice Tajikistani fella who will force you to work every day, including weekends, for approximately until you can no longer stand up. Strictly manual work, you understand. Alright, I let you off on Sunday mornings to go to the mosque and do your Sunday prayers to Allah. (I forgot to tell you that it's better for you if you'd adopt the raligion of your Tajikistani master. You can take a hint.) Your new master will also allow you to marry, and have a family of your own, and kids. But the master will get to sleep with your wife now and then, when he's feeling particularly horny and neglected by his Tajikistani wife, a woman which if you so much as look at, you will get your testicles cut off. I could go on. ...Now, would you be satisfied and content with this situation if you knew for certain that, two hundred years from now, your epigones would be eminent stars of Tajikistani showbiz and sports? This is the only valid question in the issue you are bringing forth. Because the rest of your argument directly justifies Nazi "scientific" experimentation on humans. Mickey Brausch |
