I'm interested in what that middle ground is. Psychologists have a lot of ethical guidelines they need to be wary of which is definitely the reason why she didn't want to see you outside of the office after taking you on as a patient. I would equate it to the way lawyers post on here and tell people it's not legal advice, a psychologist can't just step out of his/her office and talk to you as if you had never been a client. She's still legally and ethically responsible for a lot of things that could develop down the road. Also, if she's a member of the APA, I think she'd probably get kicked out for seeing you outside the clinical setting.
That's my understanding of it, but don't take my word for law since I'm just an undergrad Psych student.
