The "play" money seems to be the best idea. How a poker site gets the money to you can be figured out, but it should be simple.

For those of you who have friends and relatives outside of the U.S., have them open a second bank account and and sign up with the poker sites - you can then play from the U.S., but all the transactions take place abroad.

Come to think of it, Party should become just such a relative and friend.

And I'm quite appalled by the defeatist attitude of many posters here - oh well, it was good while it lasted. Do you have any idea what a colossal infringement this is on your rights? Do you even know about the main bill passed this week suspending "habeas corpus"? We're all in deep manure - AND THAT MEANS YOU. When do you get outraged, when Dick Cheney himself comes to your porch and takes a dump?

On the other hand, this might be the message: get out of the U.S. while you still can. Things can only get worse.

Can someone tell me exactly what is illegal?

My perhaps limited understanding is that it is for financial institutions to accept transactions to and from gambling sites.

Just as poker sites currently (or should I say used to...)operate outside US jurisdiction with impunity what is to stop a non-US based ewallet acting as an intermediary? OK they'll be breaking US law and the execs won't be able to vacation in Florida but so what? As I see it, there would be nothing illegal about the transfer from the US institution to the ewallet, only from the ewallet to the gambling site. Or is there a catch?

You are all totally missing the impact of this. The players who care to find a way around the law will...but they are not the fish. Most US fish (by far the biggest fish pond in the world) are going to stop playing. If a bunch of decent US players keep playing all it means that the ration of decent players to fish will be worse than ever before.

this is really as bad for all the non-US players as it is for you.

Now we can only hope that poker takes off in Asia and supplies a new bunch of fish.

Good idea. It could be like an internet bank teller. The company could come up with a clever name, tellerNET or something...
