[/ QUOTE ] You're right, he'd been back from Liberia for a lot longer than he'd told his mother. She figured it out due to the amount of time it took him to respond to her letter. I believe he was in New York. I also believe that this is how she figured out that he was trying to scam Hearst. [ QUOTE ] And I still don't really get how he was going to defraud Hearst, who surely would have sent someone to verify Odell's claims. [/ QUOTE ] Odell was pretty naive in this regard. He figured the fake "stake" paperwork and the nugget of gold would be good enough. Additionally, he was obviously hoping that his mother's relationship with Hearst would win him some points. Hearst saw through it all, though.

I suppose we have to think Odell was very foolish to make sense of this; he must have simply thought that Hearst would say "here is a pile of cash, see ya later."

[/ QUOTE ] The woman in the hotel is someone Langrishe has been banging, who has wanted to join the troupe for a long time. Also, it's inferred that Hearst killed Odell for running some sort of scam---but it's never been shown conclusively A. That Odell was running a scam or B. That Hearst had him killed. I would imagine that we'll find out more before the season ends. My completely random guess? Odell's mama makes an attempt on Hearst's life after she finds out that Hearst had Odell taken out.
