PH does what it takes to get noticed and on TV. He probably makes more $$$ through endorsements, books, dvds, his poker camp, etc than any other player today.

[/ QUOTE ]

Nonsense. From comments from other Pro's, Phil did this since 1987-2000, before the cameras even showed up at the table.

It's his personality in competitive mode. He's not putting on a show just to sell some books.

He plays the roll of bad guy and he plays it to make money. If he is going to play the roll then he must accept the fact the people don't like him and cheer against him. He was probably perfectly fine with the respone so why would it bother you?

[/ QUOTE ]

Again.. Nonsense. He was ranting at the tables long before the cameras ever showed up.

The comparison to WWE couldn't be more incorrect. It turns out that it does work to his advantage to sell his products, but he's not intentionally putting on a show.

And from what I've read/heard, he's a great guy away from his competitive arena.

Helmuth is primarily a NLHE tournament player. Doyle is primarily a cash game player, and is a more successful and accomplished player than Helmuth. Helmuth plays well against amateur players, which is probably why he specializes in tournaments.

More rubbish from betgo.

Hellmuth won most of his bracelets against fields of 150-250 pros back in the late 80s and throughout the 90s.

he's the McEnroe of Poker...or at least he tries to be. as a poker commentator, he's great.

i remember his commentary with Gabe Kaplan on the 93' WSOP final event, and he called out a lot of hands correctly. his comment style is more like golf than Lon Macharen's sensationalized and redundant 'ANNNNNND he hits the KING' sportcenter style.

I love the post that said PH didn't have many friends? How do you know this? Seems when he won #10 he had quite a few friends, and I don't mean the crowd either. I mean the other pros there cheering him on.

His father was an assistant dean at U. Wisconsin. He obviously is an educated person.

I think part of his success with vidoes etc. is he is a good commentator and very articulate. He also comes accross fairly smooth and has a good appearance and manner.

His bad boy image may help sell stuff, but I don't think it is deliberate. He does use his style to provoke opponents and get information. Also, he probably is a spoiled brat, partly due to his background and acheiving success at an early age.

I just finished reading the book 'the man with $100,000 breasts' and there was a section of it devoted to Phil and his win at the WSOP main event and his personality. It was very interesting reading, mostly about how Helmuth was pretty much a lost soul until he encountered poker and poker tournaments. Low self esteem, low self confidence, no direction in life. Discovering poker and his extreme skills at the game provided him with an arena where he could shine and be special. I think that describes a lot of us. It's just unfortunate that we find this in a game that can often bring out the worst in people.

I like Phil Hellmuth. I find him entertaining. Why do people hate him so much? I bet that 90% of you think exactly the same things that Phil actually verbalizes at the table, except you don't verbalize it. He verbalizes it, in part to create a persona/image for himself upon which he has capitalized financially, and also just because he doesn't have the normal governor that people have on expressing those types of things. However, I have seen people in the local poker room go off on Hellmuthian tirades over $300 pots.

I think people who hate Hellmuth and like to see him lose are silly, weak people who take life too seriously.

He has had six final tables in the last three years (including three this year), and 15 cashes in the last three years...
