[ QUOTE ]
Havlat and Elias will play 3 and 4 million the day Bill Guerin decides to give half his contract back to his team out of charity. Both players would be giving up 3 million a year for 3-4 years - that's not going to happen. Again, I think a 1% chance of them playing together is pretty high. Kariya and Selanne played together because it was in everyone's best interest - Kariya signed for 1.2 million because he would be a UFA early, and Selanne had no problem going along with that plan. [/ QUOTE ] This is for next year, not over 3-4 years. Havlat said he only wants 1 year. No one is "giving up" 3m. You said the Sharks couldn't afford them when it's quite possible they could. Note POSSIBLE. |

No, it's not possible. They can't do it. They'd have to trade for Havlat, first of all, then sign him to a 3M deal which is seriously unlikely because he's due 2.866 million even before any raise for his play in the regular season and playoffs. If Havlat goes to arbitration he probably gets around 4.2 to 5 million. I'll even be generous and split this and call it 4.
Elias is not signing a one year deal anywhere. He is signing for many years, at least 4 and probably 5. He scored 61 points in 47 games coming off hepatitis A - he's the best left wing in the game. I think he will get mid to high 6s and there may be a team foolish enough to commit low 7s to him. That's 11M added to the Sharks, plus all their group 2 contracts that are mandatory 10% increases. No team in the NHL can afford both Havlat and Elias, and this rumor has come from nowhere anyway - just the fact that Elias has Havlat's agent. |

[/ QUOTE ] Umm... maybe you aren't getting this but tons of teams would be able to AFFORD ( <- please read that) Havlat and Elias. No where did I say Elias is singing a one year deal. It's a rumor that Elias wants to play with Havlat. Niedermeyer took a paycut to play with his brother. It's possible Elias can be had a discount with Havlat. Again, possible. So Elias at 6 and Havlat at 5 = 11m. Did you not read the salary cap increased this year? That's another 5m to spend, Havlat is able to sign. Get rid of Nabokov = another 5m. Trading to get Havlat or Elias might mean another player is gone. That's another 1m. Thornton + McCauley gone? Another 3m free. How can you say it's not possible to have Havlat and Elias? Did you flunk math? Several teams are able to afford $11m, especially when they have a 5m increase in the cap. Saying it's not possible is beyond silly. |

The increase in the cap will go to cover RFA pay increases for most teams, including arbitration awards.
Niedermayer took a discount to play with his brother, but his brother got most of his money anyway - Rob Niedermayer is being paid 2.2 when he's worth 1.5. No I didn't flunk math - it will just be very difficult for a team to afford both, and even if they do for one season, it will become increasingly difficult to do so in future seasons. Toskala's not going to make his salary forever, Patrick Plateau is UFA soon, as is Joe Thornton. Evgeni Nabokov will be very difficult to move - I expect him to be dealt for nothing if the Sharks can find a buyer. They may even have to consider waiving him. To get Havlat, the Sharks would have to give up either Marleau (if he's UFA at end of 2007, I forget if he is or not) or some prospects like Milachek/Ehrhoff. If the Sharks didn't acquire Thornton, I would've put them as the only team capable of pulling this Havlat/Elias nonsense off, not that any team should even want both players together. Now I see it as incredibly unlikely - they just have the same agent. We could get a bet going - since you're so confident, I'll give you 10 to 1. |

Of course it's incredibily unlikely, I didn't say I expect this to happen. I'm just stating that it is possible several teams can afford $11m.
I doubt Marleau will be moved... he was rumored to be dealt during this season but that was quickly dismissed as he's the captain, fan fav, and has been the face of the organization for a long time. Not to mention he's clutch in the playoffs Besides, who want's a potential Lady Byng winner? |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Trade Minnesota gets Pavel Demitra LA gets Patrick O'Sullivan & 1st rd pick (#17?) Great deal for Minnesota. Demitra, Rolston & Gaborik is some serious punch. [/ QUOTE ] Are you kidding me? This is one of the worst deals I've heard of, Demitra is vastly overrated now, 1st round pick is worth something and my bro O Sullivan who I used to fight when he was on the Ice Dogs has skill if he can ever learn to backcheck and not float so much. [/ QUOTE ] A proven NHL'er who's still got quite a few good years in him is worth more than a prospect & a pick to a team like Minnesota. I know, I know, you played hockey so you know everything, but this is a good deal for both sides. [/ QUOTE ] The question is will Demitra ever show up come playoff time? sincerely, disgruntled Blues fan ok...kinds harsh, he had a few good series. HOwever, he was never quite the team leader come playoff time and I was not unhappy to see him go. |

Demitra has a rep as not showing up for the playoffs and it is well-deserved. However I think the new NHL has mitigated that effect - guys like Stillman, Whitney, and Recchi were terrible in the playoffs pre-lockout, but somehow performed solidly for the 'Canes. There's more space with which to operate, and the softer players don't have to fight through as many checks to get to the net.

Cristobal Huet signs for 2 years with Montreal at I believe 5.7 M total.
Tyler Arnason was not qualified by the Ottawa Senators - he will be an unrestricted free agent. Qualifying offers are due today so by tomorrow we should know who was and wasn't qualified. |

Martin Biron signs qualifying offer with the Sabres and demands a trade. Good luck on that one.
