OP : you sound like a paranoid tight-ass. Are there risks to you and your family if you win $47Mil and your name/face are plastered everywhere, sure. Do you need to flee the country in secrecy immediately, um, don't think so.

Assuming that it happens in the next 3 months, we wouldn't do much since we've got a baby due on 7/27. So, running off to Vegas or Europe ain't happening.

But, I'm quitting my job ASAP. First thing. Absolute first thing. Probably calling my boss as soon as I get confirmation that I'm getting the $$$.

Second : call immediate family (parents / brothers) to let them know so they don't hear it on the news.

so that's the first hour.

The next 3 days will include a financial planner. A lot of notebook paper. A lot of tough discussions with my wife about who in our family to help/take care of and how best to do that (I have a ginormous extended family and she has a few aunts/uncles/cousins). Some of them we'd want to help, others we wouldn't.

Its an interesting question, I just don't think that I'd be doing anything drastic up front. It would certainly make summer vacations a lot more fun for us and the kids though!

10k a year, you are a [censored] cheap, selfish, bastard. I also agree that I wouldnt write letters like im some kind of royalty. ridiculous. I dont know what Id do, but its not that. Id get my parents and grandparents a new house, my dad and mom would never have to work again, and my brothers would get their college taken care of. Id pay off all my close friends student loans, new cars for everyone, then Id buy a couple houses, a couple cars, and put the rest of my 30 million in the bank and earn interest. If you were my kid and gave me 10k a year, Id disown you, thats [censored] insulting.

[/ QUOTE ]

You are totally over-reacting. The point is, you don't want to give away so much, that they wouldn't feel the need to continue working. Let them keep earning their own living, while being gently padded by you.

What you don't want to do is set a precedent. Don't start buying all kinds of crap for them, because it will ruin them. It will never stop. Set the standard early on.

$10K for free isn't going to change or ruin anyone, but it will definitely alleviate their financial burden.

This absolutely requires explanation. OP, were you repeatedly abused by your family? Were you sold to work in the salt mines at age 6? Otherwise, Guids quoted for truth.

This is the point. Nobody cares if you get disowned when you have 47M. The roles are reversed.

Of course I "don't think so" either, but why risk it? You now have the means to get up and leave, and you now have the ability to live a much more productive, and fulfilling life with your newfound money. Why risk anything at this point?

Get out of Dodge, I say!

Uh, do you realize how little 10k per year is? Thats basically nothing. OOOO AND EXTRA 1K A MONTH whoopdee [censored] doo. My parents raised me to think that there is no way they would be ruined by having 5 or 6 million thrown at them. I would love to give my dad the chance to not work 45 hours a week, so he could go fishing, spend time with my little brother, etc, my mom, actually she would probably keep working even with all the money only becuase doesnt have to work now, but enjoys being a teacher. The rest of my extended family is very well off anyway, so Id just get them stupid, awesome stuff, that they wouldnt ever buy for themselved. Man, I hate to think about all the money your parents wasted burning you with cigarettes when you were a kid, becuase that is the only way I can see your reasoning for thinking like that.

$10K was just a number. I didn't give it too much though. I could probably go as high as $20K. The point is, I don't want to give someone enough to where they feel compelled to quit earning their own paycheck, and live off of me. It is solely intended to be cushion money. There is a fine line somewhere. Not sure what it is.$10K-$20K sounds close to it.

I want to say I'd start looking for a good interest rate / broker, but in reality, I'd probably be too lazy.

Other than that, I wouldn't do anything different than normal.
