WTF? Is that a joke?

The guy is hitting .240 before tonight.

Dude, if you wanted to go down the list of things Yankee players got that they didn't deserve, the list would be monstrous.

Besides, most of the people who vote for the all stars are stupid.

Varitek is a good catcher and a popular player so he gets votes even when he's having a crappy season. Just like Jeter got votes when he was the third best shortstop in the league and Tino Freakin' Martinez got votes for god knows what reason. And that's not even counting the guys who get picked by the manager who have no right to be there.

Do you recall what Tino's numbers were at this point last year? How about Derek's numbers?

Maybe not the best... but certainly not .240 and they were good numbers in their own right (I am not saying they deserved votes or whatever, but the numbers were not abysmal). Yankee fans wouldn't vote for a guy hitting .240 unless they were trying to vote him off the island.

Hmmm, I would say it is very close. Obviously Mauer has the flashy average, but their OBP's are very close, Mauer's slightly higher. Posada has more power, but their SLUG% are very close due to Mauer's higher average. Posada does have 35+ fewer plate appearances due to injuries, which has to count for something when voting for the all-star game.

Also, Mauer is better defensively, at least based on my personal opinion from watching them both play and on their CS%. Are their any definitive stats on catchers that you guys use similar to what is used for all other fielding positions? How many runs gained or lost kinda thing, I dont know what it is called?

Tek is leading not only because he's popular in Boston but because most fans don't look at stats consistently so they make picks based on previous seasons and vote for players they recognize as being good.

Yea, Mauer has probably been better, even though hitting the edge goes to Posada.

FWIW, i would rather a guy throw out 40% of stealers than 60%

Hmmm.......because no one but the carl crawfords would run against the 60% man while but many would still run on the 40% man even though it would be a mistake?

That's what i was getting at.

Basically a little game theory involved - optimally you would want your catcher to catch guys at a % that would still encourage players to try, while at the same time making it wrong for them to do so.

An extreme example - You would rather have your catcher throw guys out 50% of the time opposed to 100% of the time.
(Assuming managers would never try to steal on a catcher who throws out his players every time.(I would take the 100% guy against Dusty Baker ))
