If you feel bad about the world, quit preaching about it I'd say, and do something is the best solution. From help out with your own time and effort, to commit part of your monthly income to it, whatever suits you best. But don't preach to others until you're doing something yourself.

So why do I need to learn about every situation - that's why we elect politicians/ambassadors/etc. [/ QUOTE ] And how do you know who to elect without knowing whats going on in the world? Being an active citizen in a democracy takes a lot more than watching some five minute rundown the day before the election. |

[ QUOTE ]
The Holloway thread and thinking about Darfur, Sudan, etc. has made me think of how ridiculous it is that she gets so much attention and globabl tragedies don't get any attention. [/ QUOTE ] For a typical American, why should a natural disaster on the other side of the world be more important than an American tourist being murdered overseas? The natural disaster is an isolated incident which is very unlikely to ever directly impact their lives. The murder of an American may raise concerns about their own safety if they travel. |

Looks like about 69% of Americans were aware and 74% of non-Americans were aware (depending on how Daryn voted -lol).
That really isn't too bad considering the holiday week-end. I am not sure what the whole thing really says though, because the earthquake was pretty major news. Less "earth shattering" but still important stuff generally never makes the big news let alone most folk knowing about. I think your poll says more about the Media than folk in general. |

word is like yes or you agree [/ QUOTE ] Thanks 45, Wow - I would have never guessed that. I was figuring something on the lines of "I just have a word to say about that" or "a word of advice". Do you know the origin of this - it has to be a short version of something or came from saying or song or rap or something. Is it a new saying - like in the past year or even a few months new or has it been around? Sorry to hijack - OP. This will be over in a sec and we can get back to your poll. Actually, wouldn't it be interesting to poll how many know what "word" means or some similar lingo? It might be higher than the earthquake results. RJT |

"Word" is the shortened form of the phrase: "my word is my bond" which was originated by inmates in U.S. prisons. The longer phrase was shortened to "word is bond" before becoming "word," which is most commonly used. It basically means "truth." Or "to speak the truth."
