I don't think so, on the contrary I think I'd play better, because the results wouldn't matter since I was getting my hourly. This might take the "fun" out of poker since it will be like a job and literally clocking in and out and putting in hours, but at the same time the "fun" aspect of poker disappeared a long time ago for me...

[/ QUOTE ] really?? having fun and enjoying what you are doing certainly helps the winrate. Have you taken a long break( >1 month) if so, did you at least enjoy it for a little bit when you came back? |

The obvious answer here is to step down in limits and play a few more tables if you can. You'll likely sacrifice a bit of earnrate but if you adjust correctly you should reduce variance if your skill edge is greater and you're able to play a greater # of hands per session as well as the loss ammounts shouldn't bother you as much when you lose a pot.

legally - i've never taken a real break from poker, i'll be traveling all summer so this will give me an opportunity to really get away from the game which i'm sure will do wonders.
ihatecats- definitely something to think about, it makes sense now if only i could get my ego and pride to let me play 2/4 and respect the game/players and most importantly myself. this is a much tougher battle for me. |

I'm curious AZK, have you ever read Barry G's book?

yeah i read it a while ago. a lot of it applies to how i have felt about the game recently, mostly the "we all have a serious illness part...) what were you thinking?

Just about what you mentioned, a lot of the material is about psychological non technical aspects of the game which very few other sources deal with, including this forum.

And if you want lower stress and if you have the impulse control there is always ultratight set minning. Not nearly the variance.

Do the people that are saying they would never take a decreased winrate for 0 variance realize that you wouldn't ever need a bankroll bigger than a buyin/table?

I'm not exactly sure how the whole backing business works, but it's not the same as what the OP is talking about. Let's say my normal hourly rate is $200. In the OP's situation, if I sit down for 4 hours, I know that I will be able to buy a new 60gb iPod when I get off my chair. With backing, I'm not sure exactly at what point you split the profits, but I'm assuming if you breakeven for a month, you're not getting a new iPod.
