the fact that this thread is almost 500 posts is really retarded. el d and others laid out the reasons why it is a bad idea pretty clearly a while ago.

[/ QUOTE ]

Maybe the thread would slow down if it didn't feel like some kind of doomsday countdown ("You have 2 weeks to keep OOT as it is...GO")

Additionally, having a mod (diebitter) with a clear desire to see the reach and usefulness of this topic expand, can only be beneficial... as diebitter himself will champion this new forum to success!

[/ QUOTE ]

What's going to happen when a good diebitter movie review is buried by other diebitter threads?

I knew it was a bait argument, which is why I avoided it for a while. Yep, you got me good on that hook

nice one, El D.

What happened to you going to bed? Is it tomorrow already? My watch must have stopped, and the sun suspended itself in the air. Goddamned sun, always playing tricks on me.

diebitter is sooo excited by the prospect of this actually happening, that he's not going to be able to sleep for 2 weeks!

I think you meant to write, "a fortnight".

how about, if it's an 'a&e' topic, put 'A&E: " in the title, like we do with 'OT' in non-ot forums

then those that don't like OOT can just scan for A&E: or even do a title search for threads with 'A&E:' in the title...

[/ QUOTE ]

best idea in the thread

[/ QUOTE ]

Did everyone read this? Just checking.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'd like to hear someone tell me why this wouldn't work.

[/ QUOTE ]

Why have only two people commented on this idea when it is clearly the best idea in a thread of rock-em-sock-'em punditry and a valid compromise for people who a) think that their threads get knocked down too far (use the search for A&E -re:...that's what it's for) and b) people who are too scared to go to OOT can tiptoe through the peepee and poopoo to find the A&E.

Let's just do this as a compromise and maybe tone down the poop/NSFW.

ego,

If I were running this site and trying to maximize non-poker traffic, I would find out what the key elements of OOT are that keep more people from participating (strippers, poop, NSFW, whatever) and ban those topics from OOT.

[/ QUOTE ]

El D,

I meant to address that point when you made it in an earlier post and will do so now. As an alternative to creating a separate A&E forum which I favor, I would be a supporter of this. And the problem isn't really that a certain topic might offend posters in general, because the content of a thread is usually obvious from its title and they don't have to click on it, but rather the sheer volume of such stuff that drowns out most A&E threads except for the relatively few of which explode into very popular threads.

At the same time, if as an alternative 2+2 created a sex/relationships/NSFW/bathroom humor forum, then that itself might have the same effect on OOT you are saying splitting off A&E would. Plus it seems to me it would take an aweful lot of arbitrary modding, greater than that which exists now, in the forum already most heavily modded.

Gildwulf - I noted in a recently posted Georgia thread on podcasting, where he labled his post - "(A&E)" - how marvelously simple a solution that is. Just like NSFW!

Although, to date, it has received only 7 responses... I'm sure it would have 250 intelligent responses by now if there were a separate A&E forum.

Here's a question. At what point does a forum like this, open to many subjects become too crowded? There's 196 people on right now. Is there a number? People talk about posts/ threads being buried, so I have to assume there is. And given that the other forums never reach this number, I feel that siphoning off a few users to a different type of non poker forum is already warranted. Maybe I'm dead wrong. Maybe we haven't become busy enough yet in this forum to justify it. Or maybe, if the A&E forum is too much of a potentially crippling break off, there is another forum possibility that would take the strain off oot, but not create damage. I think the politics forum is a perfect example, but perhaps there are others?

mat,

there is much less of a problem with posts/threads being buried than the vocal whiners would have you believe.

darwinism kids!

bobby,

"Your constant harping on "the best business interests of 2+2" comes off as disingenuous at best. You said yourself that you perferred OOT when it was a smaller forum with a tight-nit group. I have a hard time believing that your opposition to an A&E forum has anything to do with the fear that somehow this web site's advertising revenue will drop if it is added. "

Please elaborate as to what you don't buy. Use some facts, logic, and reasoning instead of making silly statements like "I have a hard time believing" or other completely unsupported conjecture. Have I even said anywhere in this thread whether I personally would prefer a split or not?

[/ QUOTE ]
Diablo,
I'm sorry if you took offense at my comment. I wrote it too quickly and didn't read it over before posting and it came off as harsh which wasn't my intent and I apologize. If I could withdraw the comment and start over, I would.

Whenever there are threads like this, lots of people talk a lot about the business interests of twoplustwo. Since these are people who have strong interest in the quality of discussions here and the experience of participitating in the community but no real interest per se in the financial success of the parent company, it is hard not to assume that they are really speaking in their own best interest when they tell twoplustwo what they should do to make more money.

If I were working at a grocery store and a guy came in and told me that I should start stocking pineapple juice because it will a popular item and make me money, I would assume that he is saying it because he personally wants to be able to buy pineapple juice rather than that he is someone who hates pineapple juice but is giving me a tip for the well-being of my business. So his statements about my business interest appears disingenuous, even though they certainly may not be.

This is the same thing I think when I read twoplustwo and people say that changes should or shouldn't be made because they will be good for 2+2 Publishing. My intuitions about human nature say that that usually isn't their main concern and so personally I would be more convinced if they just explained to me why they want or don't want the change. I was really reacting to this line of argument in general so I shouldn't have directed the statement at you personally and I feel bad if left you or others with the impression that I was questioning either your character or your business acumen.

Sorry again,
Bobby
