most of the espn experts takes are kind of retarded..but i kind of liked this one
Jayson Stark: "What we've lost" The biggest tragedy of the steroids era is that it has robbed us of the magic -- the magic of the greatest numbers in sports. People used to walk down Main Street -- in your town, in any town -- and hear those numbers rattling around their brains. They knew what 60 meant. And 61. And 714. And 755. They weren't just baseball numbers. They were milestones from our entire culture. You didn't have to be some geeky baseball fan to know them. Women and kids and grandmothers knew them. They were numbers so powerful, you could hear the home run calls in your head if you listened hard enough. No other sport had any numbers like them. And no one should ever underestimate the importance of that. It's because of what those numbers used to mean that No. 756 and the man who hit it are still enough to make that home run a momentous news event. But it's what we've lost that's the bigger story, to me. We've lost the ability to witness these moments and hear our hearts thumping, or feel our emotions flowing. Too many people now are cynical about what just happened and why it happened for these numbers to feel the same again. And not just 756. All of them |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Is anyone else like me? I'm not really sure how I feel about this. I followed his ABs and watched it live, but I am still not sure how I feel. Kind of... nothing? [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, pretty much. I'm just glad he did it two days in advance of the PGA. Tomorrow can be spent celebrating/debating/etc., but come the weekend it will be in the rear view mirror and the spotlight will be fully on Tiger's ripped chest and bulging biceps. Speculation as to whether he's chemically enhanced will ensue and they'll debate if an * should be placed beside his name when he passes Nicklaus on the Majors wins list. [/ QUOTE ] Steroids talk will never die. Ever. [/ QUOTE ] I'd love to see the trainwreck that would happen if the media/fans started caring about steroid use in the NFL [/ QUOTE ] How about High School locker rooms? College locker rooms? Who gives a [censored] if pro's are doing it. Walk into a college football weight room, and tell me how many track marks you find on the back of the kids triceps and thighs. It's everywhere in sports. It's just part of the culture now. I guarentee that if college kids know how to cycle the stuff to avoid detection from NCAA testing I think professional's can handle that too. Playmakers was 100% correct when they showed that episode with the steroid use. I'm sick of hearing about it. It is nowhere near as big of a deal as people make it out to be. Because some sports writer thats never been there says something about it we should hate it? [censored] that. I know what I've seen with my own eyes and I know what kids were on the field and what they were doing. They weren't doing it because steroids, they were doing it because they were a level above everyone else. |

The thing about steroid use is nobody really cares. People dislike Bonds because he is a dick and than add that steroid use on to the case against Bonds. If people really cared about steroid use than people who have tested positive for steroids in the past would get crucified instead people are indifferent towards them because they don't act like dicks to the media.
Two good articles on it IMO http://www.blogmaverick.com/ http://dugout.progressiveboink.com/archive/b755.html Jayson Starks article appears to be a typical "Everything used to be so much better 20 years ago article" |

Pudge,
That's not entirely inaccurate, but if we're really willing to forgive steroid use because a person is likable then please explain Mark McGwire to us. |

The greatest! Glad he did it so quickly. Having to watch SportsCenter to see his ABs live = painful. Also happy that Selig wasn't there to spoil the moment. Hope he was taking notes during Aaron's little speech.
