Sniper,
So, OffTopic w/ 50m posts and 140k members has split its focus area (offtopic) into 47 subforums.
2+2 w/ 5m posts and 50k members has split its focus area (poker/gambling) into 37 subforums.
OffTopic has one subforum for Gambling/Poker.
2+2 has five subforums for Other Topics.
What was your point again?
(And yeah, I know you were prob just messing around)

I posted this in the mod forum, and I'll repost it here for those looking for empirical evidence that splitting out major categories from OOT is a good idea...

"Additionally, if you look at Forum post counts... of 43 forums, sporting events is #9 and politics is #11... these are clearly substantive forums on 2+2 that were split out of OOT."

Finally, I will say that even with those splits, OOT is still running strong at #1... and despite all the defensive territorial protection posts... there is no reason to believe that the overall page views across 2+2 will be harmed by yet another spinoff of a major category getting lost in OOT, but that has a clear champion in diebitter to ensure its success as a seperate forum!

ok, after having waded through the many new responses to this thread, I am still confused about a couple points that seem to be recurring

1. people upset about their (movie review) threads getting "buried" -- are you arguing that the movie reviews you post should remain within the top 5-10 threads actively being bumped in OOT at any given time? are there people that are so lazy that they can't simply view the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and maybe even 5th (!) pages of OOT topics to find your movie reviews?

2. People find topics in OOT distasteful or scary -- I mentioned it in a previous post. how gay is this? Is somebody's hand trembling on their mouse as they hover their cursor over "Other Other Topics?" do they look at the topic list and gasp because they're so flabbergasted that somebody might have typed the word "sex" on the "world wide web??" Who the hell are these people?

Mat Sklansky: I'm undecided about the whole thing, yes. We have two weeks and i shall be following the debate closely

gildwulf: If Mat is just going to decide it arbitrarily anyways, then why bother asking us in the first place?

can you not read, or is mat a liar? either way, just stop talking if you want to do the anti-split side a favor.

lots of the early responses in this thread were crap. then the splitters started winning. after that, the anti-splitters started winning. now it looks like the anti-splitters are going to blow their lead by diluting the thread with arguments about nothing.

[/ QUOTE ]

if Mat's primary concern/decision making mechanism was to get the opinion of the majority of OOT posters, then I don't understand why he still needs 2 weeks to decide.

Uhh.... This is empirical data that splitting is BAD and UNNECESSARY.

We're attempting to fix a problem that doesn't exist. This basically started because some of the mods found the current trends in OOT distasteful. To me the basic drive seemed to be "we like less posts/posters like Adam22 on our site.

This turned into an attempt to quarentine the NSFW/relationship/talk about myspace whores content in it's own forum. Once that didn't fly, the next step was "let's move the stuff we like about oot out of oot so that we can ignore the yucky parts of oot".

[/ QUOTE ]

Thanks for the insider info.

Unfortunately for them, if they move away they might miss out on some awesome yucky stuff.

And to quote my original post on this:
If it ain't broke...

[If Mat is going to decide whether or not to return things to the way they are after the split, then fine ignore my comment. But if he's going to base his post-split decision on public opinion then it appears wildly inconsistent not to base his pre-split decision on public opinion.

[/ QUOTE ]

mat also said earlier that the two weeks thing has a lot to do with Chuck Weinstock being gone for those two weeks. Mat is only going to provide input on what will ultimately happen
