[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I was just saying the "That play was not an aberration, that was the norm for him." was obviously wrong. Ten Worse OFers: Barry Bonds, Emil Brown, Jeromy Burnitz, Jack Cust, Adam Dunn, Carlos Lee, Hideki Matsui, Kevin Mench, Manny Ramirez, Preston Wilson. See, all these guys are alike, but for some reason WMP doesn't play LF like the rest of them. [/ QUOTE ] Not all of those guys on your list are worse defensively than WMP. I'll pick out the one I'm most familiar with, Manny Ramirez who I will take over Willie Mo on defense, and it's not even close. [/ QUOTE ] LOL red sox fans [/ QUOTE ] yeah because fans of other teams dont say things that dumb. |

Manny cutting off that throw was one of the funniest things I've ever seen but bringing it into this discussion is just a red herring.
And all the other comments make it sound like I think Manny is a good fielder or something. All I'm saying is he's better than Willie Mo. How about this? Do you all hold your breath every time a ball is hit to Manny? I don't. Do you all hold your breath every time a ball is hit to Willie Mo. I do. Maybe you could stick Willie Mo in LF in Fenway and he would turn out to not be a big liability as has Manny, but I'm not convinced from what I've seen. |

I don't know a lot about defense, but my understanding is the RF in Fenway is very difficult to play, CF is marginally difficult, and LF very easy (compared to those positions at other parks). Manny has to cover less ground than any other LF (short distance to the wall + no foul territory) & his throws back to the infield are the shortest in the majors. he has to learn how to play the bounces/wall, but every regular LF who played for the Red Sox has done that just fine.
the RF at Fenway has to deal with a deep fence and that curvy wall and being on top of the fans, and the CF has to deal with being up to 420 feet away + bag angles everywhere + the fact that the RF often can't help out. Manny is an ideal position in LF (maybe the easiest in MLB) and he still looks like a buffoon pretty often. WMP is being asked to do something difficult and looks like a buffoon sometimes. you need to adjust for position. put in a more intuitive way, Toro: what if you were given patches of grass to play while someone hit balls at you: one is 30 feet x 30 feet, the other 70 feet x 70 feet. where would you look better? |

please to look at the Oakland A's thread for stuff that dumb [/ QUOTE ] that thread is also like 400 posts shorter, and filled with "wtf rich harden hurt" or other misc. stuff. we get it, billy beane is smart. that doesnt make the entire fanbase a collection of geniuses. but...yea. manny isn't a better defender than pena. pena is certainly a butcher, but he can play above replacement level cf defense, which the majority of lf'ers can't do. then again, i'm not sure you'll ever see pena replace ramirez strictly for defensive purposes. |

I'm pretty sure Beckett will never be able to pitch 200 innings in a season effectively.

I had a trade at the beginning of the year that was:
Kyle gives up: -Jonathan Papelbon -Akinori Iwamura Kyle receives: -Josh Beckett -Vernon Wells I am now hopefully dealing Beckett for a high-grade corner infield bat. Let's hope small sample size works in my favor! |

in my fantasy draft i stayed away from name players and red sox because everyone was drafting too high on them... now i am thinking i should have drafted them even higher because most owners will give retarded value for someone like beckett just because they watch them every five days
