A real job is pretty sweet. You can still come home and play plenty of poker and the money doesn't matter at all, not to mention the fact that you don't have to cashout your roll all the time.

i like this bit from from Whitelime's blog (2+2 HSNLer)
I would rank the skills necessary to be successful as poker as follows (in descending order of importance): Logic/Game Theory, Psychology, Raw IQ type intelligence, Knowing basic odds like flush draw will hit x% of the time, etc. Note that some of these go hand in hand. For example at the highest levels of poker, I would say that it's almost exclusively psychology. However, in general the smarter player will win because he will be able to think one step ahead of his opponent. In this case IQ/Psychology go hand in hand. At the smaller stakes, poker is mostly about discipline, and a little logic/game theory. At the middle stakes, poker is roughly half and half logic/game theory and psychology. At the highest stakes, poker is almost exclusively about psychology/being smarter with a little logic/game theory. |

How do you guys come back after a few days off? I am very rarely able to play on weekends, so I have always have a two day lull where I don't play at all. I almost always start out mondays by losing a bunch of money. This is a serious pattern that my win rate increases as the week goes on. I feel like there must be something I can do to get my head in the game in a better way than loading up a bunch of tables and spewing.

Hmmm ... dunno ... Basically with every hand you log, you get better and better at not playing totally bad, but this sounds like a psychological issue.
Perhaps even scared and expecting to lose on monday ?? If you run 19/17, then you have a fairly wide 3betting range, which in turn take a wee bit of handreading. But gut reaction when suggesting a solution is to narrow down that range and fold instead of 3betting in some of those marginal spots for the first hour or whatever of playing. That will bring you down to like 16/15, but holla .. if you need to get into it, then that might be a solution ... keeping pots smaller. Another more drastic measure is to loosen up bigtime and play smallball for half an hour or so, but dunno if that is a good idea, if you are not used to playing like that. |
