That is correct. And you are correct about what my personal preferences are as well.

However you are not correct that I don't care about what is in the best business interests of 2+2, because I get a lot out of this site and appreciate the fact that it is free, and thus want the owners to do as well as possible.

I have not said that there absolutely can be no negative impact by such a split, but just that I don't see it happening. That could well be wrong. But it also seems to me that the dire consequences you have predicted are too extreme, especially in that such harm would be irreparable and incapable of being remediated by changing back if it is not seen to work.

A lot of things in business can never be proven if they are wrong. Let's take the concept of just in time inventory. This concept is often wrongly applied whereby there is a situation where a store is frequently out of items and thus loses potential sales. But the pointy-headed managers who implement the concept imperfectly, can often never be proven to be doing so, because it is hard if not impossible to guage the magnitude of lost sales other than some complaints which don't give the true cost of the problem.

And in this case, posters still can read both kinds of stuff by visiting both forums. In fact if they don't, and in fact only visit 2+2 for OOT and not for poker reasons (and this happens as I can attest to a number of trolls and legit posters who only inhabit SMP & Politics and NEVER make poker posts), then although the site owners lose advertising money by less impressions, they and their advertisers are very unlikely to be losing sales of poker books and related items.

You would have to show me some strong empirical data, other than the poll showing the views of the most ardent adherents of either position, that the dire consequences you predict were more likley than not EVEN if Mat would undo the changes if it didn't seem to work, for me to change my view that it is worth trying on an experimental basis.

The poll already shows that most people are against it and if it is instituted most will either post less in both or ignore A&E...if you can show any kind of scientific support for your argument please do so (for instance, ask whether people would be opposed to trying this on an experimental basis with the ability to change it back, create focus groups composed of a random sample of people from the site and interview them about possible changes on AIM/videoconference, pretty much anything a business would do before deciding to drastically change a successful business formula).

Also, for the point that we can change it back if it's not working...who would decide that it's not working? If the majority of the posters don't like it will it be changed back? If we are going to listen to the majority then why wouldn't we listen to the majority now and save the trouble? If Mat is just going to decide it arbitrarily anyways, then why bother asking us in the first place?

2+2 w/ 5m posts and 50k members has split its focus area (poker/gambling) into 37 subforums.

OffTopic has one subforum for Gambling/Poker.

2+2 has five subforums for Other Topics.

What was your point again?
