what is the point of Bc5 right now?

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't see any, it only fits after ...Bf5, Nd4 Be4, o-o and then Bc5, where it hits White's knight on d4 and on the diagonal with White's king. Right now it does nothing. I guess some people are just dying to move the bishop whether it needs it or not.

The idea is control of the square (d4) before white takes steps to control it for himself. Columns with isolated pawns are often hotly contested, especially spaces directly in front of the pawn.

Also, Bc5 immediately allows us to castle sooner rather than later, which I am hyooj about.

I do agree that NajdorfDefense came off a bit rude in his post. Some of us do know how to play chess here. In fact just about any active player from the NY area is likely to have played me or seen me at a tournament, so who knows, maybe he has.

Anyway, now that the move has been played, I don't see a whole lot of difference in the objective strength of the two main moves Bf5 and Bc5. It's just a matter of approach. Do you want to force the issue right away, possibly resulting in several minor piece exchanges, or do you want to just make a good multipurpose developing move and see what white does, perhaps hoping to keep some pieces on and compensate for the pawn structure actively?

I'm not endorsing these moves but obviously Bg6 and Qc8 are possibilities, though I expect the vote to be pretty lopsided.

Qc8 would seem to have better long-term possibilities. It would make the king-side difficult to attack, allowing you to both castle and bring out Bc5 unless White goes for attrition and bringing your Queen out into play. Although at this point Bc5 might not be the best of options in conjuction with Qc8.

Edited for last line.
