Wow. If someone not as beloved as Vehn made this comment there would have been hell to pay.

zzz

I'm sincerely sorry for pointing out the obvious facts.

No really.

Very sorry.

Reason there isn't "hell to pay" is because its the obvious truth. If vegetarian is "100% healthy for everyone" why are elaine and ed overweight? and yes I'm aware ed is a recent """""""convert""""""

[/ QUOTE ]

First of all, Edward was significantly heavier before he became a vegetarian. He has slowly brought his weight down, and the plan is to continue to do so. Second, it is obviously not the case that just because a food is vegetarian, that it is automatically healthy. One could eat a diet concentrating on french fries, potato chips, fried onion rings, tortilla chips and salsa, layer cake, Coca-cola, and beer. It would be vegetarian, but it sure as heck wouldn't be healthy. (This is not to imply that Edward eats a diet consisting solely of veggie junk food....)

But the simple fact is my vegetarian lifestyle reduces the overall death and misery on this planet.

[/ QUOTE ]

do you feel this offsets the added death and misery that the poker lifestyle your husband contributes to and condones and inflicts on this planet?

People cannot be meat-eaters without participating in animal torture.

Elaine, if I see a deer in the woods and shoot it in the head (i.e. it dies instantly), is that animal torture?

[/ QUOTE ]

No, it's managing to get within five feet of a deer before shooting it, which you probably couldn't repeat sober. My guess is it would probably involve falling down a hillside during a pee.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Elaine:

I have no problem with you being a vegetarian. It is a choice like anything else.

But if you really want to make difference in the earth then you really should not have a cat. Domesticated cats cause more problems to the environment than any other animal. They absolutely destroy animal populations and completely change ecosystems. If you really want to do some good you should put down your cat and any cat you see. I'm being serious here too, I'll find some articles so you don't think I'm just blowing smoke up your ass.

I'm assuming your cat is an indoor cat b/c you are LV, so it won't have quite the impact, but in general domesticated cats are horrible for the environment - far worse than eating meat has ever done.

just some food for thought.

Everyone is a hypocrite. Its just a matter of how much hypocrisy each person is willing to accept.

[/ QUOTE ]

Max,

This is wrong. There is a big difference between not being able to be completely consistent in one's beliefs and conduct and being an out and out hypocrite. Life oftne forces compromises on us whether we like it or not. Ethical vegetarians such as myself sometimes are forced into compromises (e.g., I try to eschew leather products and wear non-leather shoes on the weekend; however, I have been unable to find non-leather shoes that really satisfy my businesses dress code so I wear leather shoes during the week with my suits (which I would also prefer not to wear, but for other reasons)). For any set of ethical values, not just vegetarianism, one might encounter conflicts that cal for compromise. But that is different from hypocrisy where one professes to do one thing and advocates that others do the same while having no intention to conform to the professed code of conduct.

[/ QUOTE ]

Good point. There is a difference. My point was that people often try to argue against vegetarians by pointing out perceived hypocricies such as the fact that Elaine feeds her cat meat or that animals and humans are sometimes harmed in the production of fruits and vegatables. I don't think that is a valid argument. People need to make their choices about what they consider ethical behavior and sometimes what they would ideally like to do is not practical. For anyone who tries to live their life by some principles there are always going to have to be those choices, but that doesn't make their commitment to those principles any less sincere (unless they are just a out and out hypocrite).

Paluka,

Is your kid born yet?

When I was growing up, my mother tried to raise me to make my bed every morning. Eventually she gave up. Sometimes kids are not able to be exactly what you want them to be. I wish you luck with rasing the little vegetarian, but don't be too dissapointed if your child doesn't cooperate.
