I've read a quote from CC and I know from a writers assistant that initially it was viewed as 5 seasons...but with the ratings etc they changed to 7.

If season 3 can continue a little of the success of the finale that means 6 is a sure bet. And so we are talking even money as far as them getting to 7. The question will be how they might deal with cast defections and the like..if any of the Big 4/5 decide to jet, it would be tough to recover I think...

I know a lot of people that are getting sick of it already. I was as big a fan as you could find, and the finale left me disappointed. It's not outside the realm of possibility that it could plummet by mid next season. Plus 1.5 is only 4. I'm not saying it's likely, I'm just saying this type of thing can lose viewers in a hurry if they don't play it perfectly.

crazy thats got to be the dumbest theory ever...i know a lot of people who were sick of Seinfeld and Friends...yet I don't remember them canceling those series.
It got record ratings this year...I would bet my life that there is no way it would plummet by mid next season let alone mid season 4. LOST is a guarantee for 5 years. 6 and 7 will be good as long as the storylines are planned out.
