a huge majority think a split would be a bad idea. 70% is a lot.

[/ QUOTE ]

30% is also a lot when it comes to judging the interest and traffic a new forum would have.

[/ QUOTE ]

like DB, you're missing the point.

Mat,

The enemy of the best is the good. No company would ever tinker with a product to make it even better, if they were scared to death about the effects making a change might have, or even if they only went by the direst warnings of current customers. Of course you do risk making an error (think New Coke), but the question is really can you be irreparably harmed for just trying.

FWIW, both sides have presented their best arguments here already, and all 2 weeks will give is a rehash of that IMO.

Yeah, I really doubt anything substantial is going to come up in two weeks on this. The thread is 43 pages long already, and what's to be said has probably pretty much been said.

"The enemy of the best is the good."

Um...

Ah. Voltaire was French... Nevermind.

And don't you think that those members of 2+2 who don't read everyday like most of us in this thread might then give the new forum some play when they don't even bother with OOT now because the front page would never show many if any A&E threads when a less frequent poster/reader stops by?

[/ QUOTE ]

NO ONE IS ARGUING THAT!!!

You and DB really suck at reading. I'm sorry to sound harsh. El D and others have granted you that point countless times.

An A/E forum succeeding is not in question. The extent to which that success would come at the expense of OOT is the question.

To put it another way - # of successful sub-forums is not the issue. Total 2+2 traffic is the issue.

Seriously - you keep arguing A. Several people respond and say "I grant you A, but what about B?" And you guys keep coming back with "Yeah but I think A."

Whoever thinks that 30% means support for an A&E forum is [censored] clueless.

Will someone on the other side of things please run some kind of scientific inquiry (focus groups, looking into other websites, polls, ANYTHING) before you do something this drastic?

BT,

I suspect that what I earlier said to db applies to you as well:

I suspect you do not have any experience on the business side of high volume content/discussion sites, is that correct? Your arguments all center around what you, a specific profile of user whose interests do not seem to coincide with the core demographics of this site, would like to see in a site. That's a reasonable position for you to take, but unlikely to be one that's in the best business interests of 2+2.

I suggest you take a look at the major offtopic site (offtopic.com)... they don't have 1 huge forum... they have split offtopic into 47 different categories and with 142,000 members and 53 mil+ posts, I'd say they aren't hurting for splitting things up!

2+2 isn't even close to that big, you are comparing apples and oranges and you know it.
