When are you assigned the seat in satellites, after the bubble, or after you are KO'd / win the whole thing?

Just saw the chip leader in this sat desperately raising every hand as fast as he could against a player who was MIA (with just 15 mins left). If somehow he could not finish the tourney before the Main Event started, would he not have got a seat?

(luckily 2nd place guy returned and pushed, ending it quickly, but how much would that suck, to not win a seat because you can't win all the blinds in time...)
