Although not a top tier All Time Movie, this movie was worth the $8.

It was a very clear cut good vs. evil, right vs. wrong kind of flick, which I like.

The action was awesome. The story line was bare, but I think that added to the feel of the movie. Seems like everything was much more simple in that time. If some king was more powerful than you and had a bigger army, they would take your stuff. No questions.

The Spartans wanted to be free and they knew that freedom came by physically protecting it, so they became the best fighters in the world. Lot's of good lessons to learn there.

yeah the ships crashing was pretty random

The producers had the ships crashing to show the enormous size of the Persian empire. We saw what, hundreds of ships being sunk? Then when the Spartans see them land, there were well over 100,000 troops getting ready. It was showing that while 100 ships to a normal empire would be a tragic loss, but to Persia it was nothing at all.

And killed their infants, and they weren't really free since they had to serve in the military for most of their lives. The Spartans weren't about freedom, they were about a very specific way of life based on very specific values.

I really like the movie. I thought that it was a different type of movie and that alone made it different. As far as the 1/2 speed fight scenes, I loved it. Actually seeing a lot of the gore happening in slow motion was neat. How do I make something white so I can ask about a part of the movie.

Well, they talked a lot about being free in the movie, so I was commenting on that. I don't know a ton about the actual history of the story.

Sparta has some really cool history, despite being the military powerhouse they fought much less often in the peloponesian wars than other states did in the area. They were definitely well equipped and well disciplined/trained and they turned a few victories over larger but poorly equipped/trained opponents (this is what happens at Thermopylae- the Spartans pick perfect terrain for their strengths and go up against an opponent whose spears struggle to pierce spartan armor, and whose own armor provided little defense). They used their reputation as a weapon in a lot of instances- refusing to send troops to allies unless their generals were in charge. Once in charge they would set their (usually small) contingent of warriors against the weakest wing of the opposition which naturally allowed for more glorious tales of dominating opponents who outnumbered them (which leads to a psychological advantage on the field as well.
As far as Sparta is concerned as a state- it was much closer to a military dictatorship than a free country in the sense that we think of it.

Every reason mentioned why a person didn't like the movie I could careless while watching. I went into the movie wanting to see some badasses brutalizing in war, cool visual imagery, and lines like, "SPARTANS!!!! PREPARE FOR GLORY!!!!" It turns out that I liked most of the rest of the movie too. Agreed that I found myself thinking Gladiator a lot, like the end when the Queen and her son are standing in the fields, the fields looked exactly like the ones in Gladiator. Oh well, I didn't go to this movie to be nitty. I thought it was really good and would see it many times.

It was stupid. By the end of the movie you were able to remember two characters' names. Ugh.

Coolest LOOKING movie I've ever seen, but it doesn't even come close to holding a candle to Gladiator or Braveheart. I just didn't care when characters got killed off because I had no idea who they were. If they sped up the slow scenes they could've added an hour to the movie and had some character development.
