[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] If you use the far reaching microphone you get as part of celebrity for political ends, you must expect to be placed under the microscope. You can't have your cake and eat it too. [/ QUOTE ] In the USA I'm pretty sure you're supposed to be allowed to criticize the president without having your life repeatedly threatened by a bunch of yahoos. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, I am pretty sure that in the USA us yahoos are allowed to criticize those who criticize the president. Kinda neat how that works. NCAces [/ QUOTE ] Criticizing =/= death threats lol |

The issue isn't death threats, which of course is wrong and for which the perpatrators should be tracked down and prosecuted. You all are whining because they were criticized ... which I am perfectly entitled to do and will continue to do. Or do you agree that it was the military industrial complex behind it? Talk about lol. Stop laughing long enough to think. NCAces |

In addition to death threats and other forms of intimidation and harrassment, there were also organized boycotts/record burnings/etc. on the part of pretty much the entire country music community. Yes, they are entitled to their opinion. But it certainly doesn't say much for what the average country music fan thinks of free speech. Of course you can say "Shut up and sing", but would the country fans have said that if the Chicks talked about how proud they were of the great job our commander in chief is doing? They'd probably get a parade and a place of honor in the Texas Hall of Fame. It's ok to talk politics as long as you stick with the majority. |

[/ QUOTE ] I believe they would be exercising their own free speech by condemning them, no? Should no one criticize anything anyone says in order to escape the wrath of people like you? [ QUOTE ] Of course you can say "Shut up and sing", but would the country fans have said that if the Chicks talked about how proud they were of the great job our commander in chief is doing? They'd probably get a parade and a place of honor in the Texas Hall of Fame. [/ QUOTE ] So what if they did? Should they not be allowed to express such opinions? If you just don't agree with the country music industry's reaction, that's fine. But stop with the melodramatic "ZOMG free speech oppression!!!" already. |

[/ QUOTE ] Re-read your post and seriously try to understand what I am saying. I don't think you understand what free speech means. On one hand you say that the fans are entitled to their free speech and then you criticize them for exercising it. I don't know how to tell you this other than to say that everyone here was exercising their free speech rights ... the Dixie Twits, the country music fans, and the radio stations. The only people who are arguing inconsistently with free speech are those like you who are maligning the country fans because they happen to take exception to what the Twits had to say, and what you appear to believe. That isn't the way free speech works. You get to exercise yours, I get to exercise mine, whether you agree with it or not. Of course the outcome would have been different if they were in support of George Bush. Last I checked, country music fans tend to be a little over the top in support of all things military, and they are clearly a nationalistic lot. Nothing wrong with that in my mind. So, you are the Dixie Twits and you go out and basically insult the core beliefs of your main fans. Then they did it again, and then they did it again. What the hell did they expect to happen? They got what they deserved, and I hope they are proud of that ... and I mean it. Good for them to stand up for what they believe ... even though I disagree with them, and choose not to listen to their music (I sneak in a song or two from time to time), I respect them for doing so. |

[ QUOTE ]
You realize how silly this statement is? You are willing to defend the Dixie Twits right to expression by supressing my right to cricize them for their expression. You r dissenet is ok, and mine isn't? That is what you are saying. They weren't jailed ... there was no governmental censorship ... they were able to continue to say whatever they wanted negatively about Bush and the war, call him all sorts of names, etc. Those of us who disagreed with them expressed our feelings by not buying their albums or going to their concerts and calling them names. Seems to me that this worked out for everyone - a great example of freedom of speech for everyone involved. [/ QUOTE ] Ummm... cities had to consider cancelling their concerts because of the threats on their lives. When they did peform they had to have the cities police coordinate their security because of the endless deaththreats. The fascists we're talking about are the kind that threaten to kill people who disagree with them. [ QUOTE ] The only one I see stifling dissent is you. [/ QUOTE ] You are ridiculous. The right wing loonies threaten others lives. No one on this forum does any such thing. Your rhetoric is ridiculous. |

[/ QUOTE ] I guess this nutter thinks that threatening people's lives is the same as free speech. End any chance of rational speech with this guy. |

kurto: if we declare you the "winner" of this argument, will you shut up already? [/ QUOTE ] No. By the way, as a general rule when someone has 4 posts, I don't think they're starting out right in the forum just telling people to shutup. |
