[ QUOTE ]
Dem, You so fail to understand the mentality of the debt-ridden middle class. I'm guessing you are either a child who has never had to support himself or have a very high income. My bet is the former as a college student with parents who foot the bills but I may be stereotyping. J [/ QUOTE ] Jay, I'm married and not in debt. But I'm amazed at the conclusions you were able to draw at my labeling of this whole ordeal as a practical joke (which btw-it was), certain debt-ridden folks being more rattled by this doesn't turn the joke into a 'cruel act'. Plenty people of all income levels including those who are in debt have a sense of humor, but perhaps folks should compare credit scores before exchanging humorous gifts. |

[/ QUOTE ] Dem, Ok, so you are in the very high income class. I notice you did not deny that while asserting yourself. Here is what you are missing, for some people 10K is a life changing amount. It is enough money that the problems which have been causing loss of sleep and late night spousal fights could at worst delay themselves for a little while longer. Dangling that carrot and then saying haha is a terrible thing to do. This should be obvious. J |

[/ QUOTE ] This wasn't a humorous gift. It was a cruel practical joke, no matter who the victim is. That he didn't know who would receive the gift is not a mitigating factor. Giving that item as a gift is an [censored] move. The point of the gag is to delight in their disappointment after you reveal it's a fake ticket and that doesn't require a poor person to be the victim. Basically, OP's cousin is a dick and deserves at the least some shunning. |

Jay,
My financial status is irrelevant. I could have a networth of $20 or $200k, it has no bearing on whether or not this is a joke or an act of cruelty. I can assure you the fake lotto ticket was not made to harm others, it's a silly joke designed to get a rise out of people. The reason its silly to reveal it being a hoax right away is because it defeats the purpose of the joke, it sounds like you just don't appreciate the humor behind it and thats entirely your right. Villainizing the cousins character is silly. Remind me not to hang around you on April 1st, though. |

I think this is an okay prank if the person who receives it is well off or has a very good sense of humor. But giving this to someone with money problems is pretty cruel.
Although I have to admit that I am cracking up now since I don't know the victim of the prank. |

Being in debt/not being able to make ends meet can put people into severe depression and even cause some people to commit suicide. Playing this prank on someone who is in serious debt is along the lines of a doctor telling a cancer patient that he is cured and then saying just kidding. Obviously it's not as serious as that, but it's the same idea. |

I should not need to explain why a 10K gift means more to the -50K folk than the +250K. I have yet to hear an argument how this joke is funny at all to any wealth class. This is at best a meh, at worst a murder. Have you given such a gift recently? J |

The only thing he did wrong imo was let it go on to long, I think 5 minutes tops before he should have fessed up. Also I would make sure someone with a good sense of humor got them.
I did something similar to a girl I use to work with, except it was for the state lotto worth millions. I'm pretty sure that I am lucky to be alive after that stunt. |
