1. Resonably trustworthy sources put Hellmuth as a resonably nice guy away from the table.

2. He ain't at the poker table.

3. This image has allowed him to sell himself for a great deal of money.

4. He could change his image (albeit gradually) if he wanted to.

Therefore, no need to feel too badly for him. The comparison with a WWE villian is an apt one.

The wrestling heel analogy is perfect. That's what Hellmuth tries to be. I think a TRUE fan of Hellmuth would boo him (or cheer when he busts out of a tourney).

What's he like in real life? Who knows? Same can be said for Sheikhan and Matusow, as well as Harmon and Greenstein. Hell, for all most of us know, Sheikhan could be a much more caring, good-hearted person than Greenstein.

Poker is poker. Real life need not bear any resemblance.

He plays the roll of bad guy and he plays it to make money. If he is going to play the roll then he must accept the fact the people don't like him and cheer against him. He was probably perfectly fine with the respone so why would it bother you?

I talked with Phil a few times briefly and he always treated me (and everyone else I saw him associate with) with respect. Until the tournament, that was another story lol.

I've had the pleasure/displeasure of working with PH during a few different poker show tapings. His behaviour at the table is not an act. He IS that bratty and self-invloved. He's incredibly, ridiculously narccisitic (sp?). So much so, he's like a cartoon character, and as such, impossible to take seriously.

Strangely enough, despite all that, he's still likable!

"Phil Helmuth is just a goofball." ~ Barry Greenstein.

I think that just about says it all.

Helmuth is primarily a NLHE tournament player. Doyle is primarily a cash game player, and is a more successful and accomplished player than Helmuth. Helmuth plays well against amateur players, which is probably why he specializes in tournaments.

Of course I've never met Hellmuth in person, and I'm sure he's nice to his wife, old ladies, and puppies, but he is a complete [censored] whenever I see him on TV.

He is an insecure jerk who wants everybody to know what a great player he is and what an idiot every other player is. The "this guy can't even spell poker" diatribe was one of the most assholish things I've seen anyone do, and I can't believe he continues to get away with this type of crap.

Great player? Obviously. Deserving of respect? [censored] that.

He is poker's version of Barry Bonds--a serious [censored] with serious game.

[/ QUOTE ]

I've never heard Phil Hellmuth telling 8 year old boys to "[censored] Off" when asking for an autograph.

You know obviously know NOTHING about Bonds and Hellmuth away from the field and table, so just keep your trap shut.

Hellmuth is good friends with MANY, MANY pros and a very nice guy away from the table.

Bonds is an [censored], on the field, off the field, and wherever he is. This has been confirmed by about a couple hundred people in "Love Me/Hate Me".

I've never heard a single person comment that Phil was abrassive or rude to anybody away from the table.

The only people who probably have a problem with Phil away from the table are those with confrontational/bully personalities, such as Sam Grizzle.

Phil says what he thinks. There's not a person in here who hasn't ranted to themselves, "God what a [censored] idiot, I can't believe that guy just did that." Pnil lets it out at the table, that's his one vice.

Get off his case. There are far worse [censored] in the poker world than Hellmuth.
