Decent episode. Like others have said, we didn't to hear about the "side bet" every 2 or 3 hands. Also, did they need to make the dealer part of the show? Showing an human interest profile is fine, but like the side bet they kept refering the Darryl the dealer every few hands.

That QQ limp hand may have been one of the worst televised poker hands of all time.

Haven't heard anyone mention this yet but several players (Gavin, Allie etc) were drinking at the table. Wonder if this had any effect on the outcome. Would certain hands be played differently? (ex. Gavin's AJs hand, and 44 heads up hand, Allie's T9o hand) Probably not but just throwing it out there.

allie had a beer, but to me it looked like gavin was drinking a diet pepsi bottle. i could be wrong though, can anyone with tivo/dvr confirm?

I did see Gavin drink from a Diet Pepsi bottle at one point, although he could've been drinking other stuff too.

this episode was all-around awful imo. the poker had some questionable plays: open limping queens and then checking the ace high flop? all-in over the top of gavin smith with 10-6? it was unbelievable how much time they wasted showing scenes of the destruction in new orleans. i understand that the city is still rebuilding, but it's a poker show. give it a few minutes of coverage and then focus on the action. we also don't need to hear about the side bet every hand, or norman chad making some ridiculous joke about his third divorced ex-wife.

Gavin wasn't drinking until about half way through heads up.

I don't remember much about Allie drinking or not drinking during play but I did see him in the one shot drinking a beer.

Dana was pretty well in the bag but not really a factor in the tournament.

Allie's T9o hand was fine... Allie's T6s call all in was odd, and a bad play imo. Gavin's AJs hand (he was not drinking at that point) was an ok play but I think he could have played it better by smooth calling my raises and trying to push me around post flop.

The 44 hand was again a bit strange but not terrible and I think just a few hands into heads up he thought maybe I would fold a ton of hands there. Again he was not drinking at that point.

Thanks for clearing that up Peter.
Congrats on your big win.

Another question on the 44 hand. What range of hands would you have called with here? I was suprised that Gavin wasn't trying to play smaller pots. I'm not sure why he'd want to play such a big pot preflop with 44 instead of trying to outplay you after the flop. I guess like you said, he thought you'd fold alot. You seemed to be playing tight from the TV coverage.

I've played with Allie in a home game. He's not a bad guy or anything. He's born into money. His dad used to own the AA baseball team in Memphis.

What do you guys think of Gavin's strategy of calling short stack all-ins with absolute trash. My thinking has always been that I at least had to have something half-way decent. The way it worked out, he gave some players some extra life and drained his stack a bit.

[/ QUOTE ]

Gavin Smith's big stack strategy was great, IMO. He's got a majority of the chips in play and 4-5 opponents trying to fold into a higher finishing position. He should be raising a lot more than usual to build his stack with little resistance, which he did.

Calling the all-in reraises from the shorties is also a key part of his strategy. The other players want to survive, so calling all-ins shows them that if they play back at him, their tourney life is on the line. The call usually represents a tiny portion (1/10 or less) of Gavin's chips.

His only mistake was re-raising all-in with AJ when a the guy who eventually won, had open-raised from EP. He was the only player deep enough to hurt him and had been very quiet to that point (at least from what they showed on TV). That raise was a bit ambitious, IMO.

Other than that, he put on a big-stack clinic.

I'm not sure it's the same person but there's an Allie Prescott that was involved with the Redbirds and currently works for the Memphis Grizzlies.

After reading this I'm pretty sure it's the same fella.
