the dumbest thing about this post is it assumes only high limit players are [censored] at the poker table.
I saw someone evicted every night last time I was in Vegas and that was 1/2 NL - if anything, the high limit game was ahead of the curve in it's smug superiority and crass behavior towards dealers - whereas now it's pretty normal to see someone bitching at the dealer for throwing out a 6% river card - (cause you know it's all deliberate, right?) [ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] I talked with a reliable source who said he was playing some cash games at a casino with one of the dealers that deal the big game occasionally. He said the dealers hate dealing the big game b/c when the players get pissed off they throw thier cards at the dealer's hands and purposely try to cut them. LOL. The girl (the dealer playin in the cash game) said she learned to keep her hands up in the air after all the action had stopped on the river b/c the first time she dealt the big game, she had cut marks all over her hands. Just thought it was interesting. Thoughts? [/ QUOTE ] The larger limit games 1k/2k and up have not been kind to dealers. Some of the players at all limits are a bit on the unsavory side, however when I play high I try to be kind and courteous to players and dealers. Some things you see or hear of, are a small sample of things that occur during a long session. For example T.V tournaments and high stakes poker episodes show someone lose their temper or act in a way that is not normal for them, because it is good television. The next point that is always brought up is the tipping factor. At high limit I keep a stack of redbirds to tip the dealers when I win a pot. I tip 10 to 25 for a dealer when their session ends if I feel they have performed their job very well. It is subjective, I may tip between 100-400 a session which I think is in line. My winrate at the very high levels is under 1bb/hr. I believe in tipping when the dealer does their job exceptionally. You would be surprised how many dealers expect 100+ dollar tps when they deal a monster. Maybe I am in the minority but I tip and tip well for good service not because I play high. [/ QUOTE ] Word. I spent last week at Turning Stone and the disparity in tips I found kind of amazing. Some of my friends were tipping $10 a pot at the 1-3 spread limit game. When I played the 5/10/20 uncapped some people would tip $1 on 5k pots. I've always leaned toward tipping more for big pots but it's definitely affected by how well the dealer does his/her job and how courteous and friendly he is to me and everyone. I'm there to win, but I'm also there to have a good time. (I remember tipping one dealer basically double on every hand because she was the only one who even remembered my name after a week of loooooong sessions where I did my best to meet all of them.) |

the dealers say they wont tip them a dime. i assume that means the dealers are saying the players arent tipping more than a dollar. maybe im mistaken and they are saying that they arent even getting tipped a dollar, which really isnt all that unreasonable as every pot in the 4k/8k game is 10k+ so for a player to not tip for 1 pot isnt that bad especially if hes stuck as long as the dealers are still making a very good wage.
of course, as someone mentioned i think that if better dealers are dealing the big game then they should be tipped better than normal dealers. im not saying dealers shouldnt make money, of course they should, just many of them think they deserve to make more than $30/hour just because they are dealing a game that results in large amounts of money changing hands. they dont. tom, of course its wrong for players to blame the dealer when they catch bad cards. i was just saying that many dealers feel they should be rewarded for dealing lucky hands yet these same people dont feel they should be chastised when they deal losing hands. my point is that dealers dont influence the luck of the cards and shouldnt be compensated based on whether someone at the table is lucky or not. they should however make a fair hourly rate but many of them feel they are entitled to more than they receive and get angry when they are only tipped a dollar for shipping a 20k pot. this angers me because i personally see to it that dealers make a fair hourly wage because i tip more than they receive on average. some get angry when only receiving a dollar for shipping a nice pot which shows a serious lack of appreciation for someone like me who does his best to provide for them a good living. of course, most dealers dont say anything at the table but so often ill be talking to a dealer and hell tell me about how someone only tipped him a dollar when he shipped that person a $2000 pot and how that someone is cheap because of it. how ungrateful. |

Hey TStone,
There are tons of pros and/or regulars at Commerce who do not tip period. Unfortunately they are often the most likely to berate dealers when they lose etc. Every time I play at Commerce I wind up feeling very bad for the poor guy or girl dealing to my table at least once. -DeathDonkey |

yah thats really unacceptable and i want to make it clear that im not defending these people. are there people who play in bobby's room at bellagio who dont tip dealers? you hear rumors about how some people never tip but in reality some of these people dont tip while losing but tip double while winning. michael jordan has been rumored that he never tips while playing 20k/hand blackjack, but i imagine this rumor started by some guy who saw michael play one session. maybe he was stuck this session and doesnt tip while stuck, but while hes winning hes tipping cranberries.
berating dealers for bad cards is obviously retarded however. last week at the borg i saw someone rip up some cards in the 80/160 game because he lost a few pots. absolute unacceptable. at least hes not trying to papercut the dealers though. there also is some justification in the fact that some people dont feel they should be obligated to tip. maybe they feel that the casinos should be paying the dealer's wages and if people stop tipping the house will pay the dealers as they should. in reality, dealers should be just as mad at the house for paying them base salary as they are at players who undertip. they should actually be more angry at the house as the house is making money while most players are losing. personally, i dont feel i should be obligated to tip as i think that is the house's job to pay the dealers, but i still do it because i understand that the dealers deserve to make money. it is however unfair that the burden to pay the dealers has been passed on to the players. |

I agree with TStoneMBD. Its an outrage that the players are paying both the house(rake) and the dealer(tip). Imo the house recieves rake so they can pay the dealers..
