Right, but they're all fighting experts, supposedly

Oh. Because martial arts are really just an art. They're meant to fight under specific rules. Otherwise they're helpful but won't be of much help when a trained killing machine is coming your way. You can strike him, you can try and use his weight against him, etc, but ultimately he will get a grab and you'll be dead.

No, they're not experts at fighting under real conditions except for the MMA fighter and possibly the Seal (who wouldn't have the experience or technique to cope with the MMA expert anyway). The street fighter would be technically outclassed, the martial artist and the boxer are too specialized.

The MMA's techniques aren't good enough. You can kick and dodge all you want, but the big guy just won't stop. It's a known fact that if one of the fighters wants to get into close combat, you can't stop him. Especially if he's bigger than you.
Boxing and karate happen because both fighters want to stay in range for their strikes, but no closer. |

MMA includes expertise in ground fighting against bigger opponents. Check out how the early Royce Gracie fights, you'll be surprised.

I'm not saying a MMA expert won't beat a weightlifter or a random guy with huge muscles, but he won't beat one of these guys we're talking about.

Matchups
1) Street Fighter vs Boxer Boxer wins, I don't understand how a street fighter could break through the defenses of a boxer which constantly getting pummeled in the head. 2) Street Fighter vs Seal Seal wins through being a more disciplined fighter 3)Street Fighter vs Martial artist Martial Artists train to be able to take on opponents such as this. 4)Street Fighter vs UFC dude UFC guy, duh. 5)Boxer vs Martial Artist The best martial artist will have too large of a skillset and be too fast for a boxer to take down, so win goes to the MA. 6)Boxer vs Seal Once again, the boxer is too slow for someone trained for intimately close combat so the win goes to the Seal 7)Boxer vs UFC guy Same matchup as Boxer vs MA, boxer is too slow and has too narrow of a skillset to beat the UFC champ. 8) UFC guy vs Martial Artist I think the only difference between many UFC fighters and martial artists is the amount of time they spend training. UFC fighters have no life outside of fighting, so they win through a sheer training advantage. |

a top boxer would kill a mmaer in boxing. maybe even in kickboxing due to size of talent pool of pro boxing. [/ QUOTE ]That's an important factor, right there. And the monetary rewards of each field go that direction as well. (Not all choices are based on monetary compensation, or only on them, but the money does to attract people into the pool.) |

I'm surprised nobody has came up with a Poker analogy yet. Let's see. In a heads-up No Limit Hold'em freezeout match with deep stacks, who would be the favourite? The best poker-playing actor (he can fake tells!) The best poker-playing psychologist (he's inside your head!) The best poker-playing mathematician (he knows the odds!) The best poker-playing chess player (he's highly trained in another game!) Phil Ivey ? Now, tell me how the MMA expert doesn't crush everyone else ? [/ QUOTE ] Pick a different format than a headsup match. The cards rule and Ivey's edge there is not as great as it would be at a ring table. Got your point though |

Special Operations people generally spend very little time training for hand to hand combat (relative to the others), unless they supplement it as recreation, because it is the least likely and applicable way of killing the enemy. The training they do receive looks a LOT like MMA training, along with some gouging and the like. Problem is, in a real fight, the elite martial arts guys and UFC folks are also familiar with such "dirty" techniques. The SEAL would get absolutely murdered against this crowd, and would say so.
