btw, why does everyone keep saying she's smart? shes not hermione [/ QUOTE ] http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/ne...00/5283528.stm [ QUOTE ] It seems Emma Watson is as clever in real life as her character Hermione Granger is in the magical world. She grabbed an outstanding eight A*s and two As in her GCSE exams, the results of which came out on Thursday. [/ QUOTE ] A* effectively means 100% and A is "only" 90+. Remember too that these are about equivalent to US school exams at age 18. British kids are smarter. Don't need to go to college to learn how to add. |

I've talked to Brits who only graduated high school or who went to perfectly ordinary colleges, some who didn't graduate, and the difference with young American dudes is huge. Even a lot of the very average blokes over there have a vocabulary that makes our high schoolers and college graduates look like kids still in elementary school. The standards are higher over there even for dumb people.

But most of my friends have ridiculously small vocabularies. Then again I do come from the West Country (lol inbreeding) and most of my friends aren't particularly clever. In general though I don't think we are particularly better educated than an American of a similar age. There is definitely a class divide in this, if you have spoken to a lot of middle class kids you will have a drastically different opinion than if you had spoken to a lot of working-class or inner-city kids. |

The working class is less likely to afford coming over to America to wow me with their vocabularies, so I've probably got a skewed sample in some ways. But not all middle class people are all that bright or accomplished, and although I haven't met all that many Brits, the ones I did had a very natural, completely unforced vocabulary -- not one used to impress people at cocktail parties or whatever -- that was surprisingly large compared to the middle class Americans I grew up with and the middle class to wealthy Americans I went to college with.
So comparing what's probably pretty much apples to apples -- our middle class to yours -- I found yours to have a much better vocabulary. I'm sure the lower classes in both countries have limited vocabularies. Ours sure does. |

Hmmm I think I agree then. I guess my view is skewed because most of my friends from schoole etc are working class. However, everyone I went to university with had very decent vocabularies and was pretty intelligent. Just from films and TV I get the impression that a lot of the kids in American colleges would never get into a semi-respectable UK university. How did we get onto this anyway, more Emma pics!!!
