Pelfrey...or just keep it like 3 runs in 5...innings would be great as well. [/ QUOTE ] If Pelfrey can give us 5 innings while giving up 3-4 runs starting tonight until Pedro gets back I would be ecstatic. |

Bob,
Take a pill. Seriously. Sosa has a higher upside than Park, possibly much higher looking at his '05 performance. That's why you don't want to finagle with him, particularly since you're basing his expectations largely on a mere handful of minor league starts this season. With the problems in the Mets rotation apparently not limited to El Duque (i.e., Pelfrey), there's no need to take what *might* be your best option and risk screwing him up so he can make one start on a chilly night in April against the Marlins. As of Sunday, the Mets were saying, at least publicly, that they thought El Duque would pitch Monday. In fact, their own website was reporting yesterday that El Duque might still pitch. |

Actually, I get the impression (from WFAN, FWIW) that the Valentin injury may be the more worrisome one. I think I heard Ed Coleman indicate that they expected El Duque to miss just a couple of starts, but that Valentin's injury arguably requires surgery. He had a similar injury before and he reportedly was "not the same player." But because his bonus requires that he get 400 at bats, he's hoping to avoid surgery this time around (and because this is the last year of his contract).
Anyway, if El Duque really just misses a couple of starts, that is no big deal. Losing Valentin for a few months, though, really would hurt. |

Yes I heard that same report that the Mets expect El Duque to miss 1-2 starts ... but Jason Schmidt is out with the same injury and I think he's been out longer.

I don't think anyone has brought this up yet...but why don't the Mets move Sele into the rotation until El Duque comes back? Then move Park (or whomever else they want to call up) out to the bullpen to be the long relief/garbage guy.
Sele would be better than Park and Park would definitely hurt us a lot less eating up garbage innings in the pen. |

I've read that they haven't ruled Sele out as an option. I can only guess that Omar/Willie would rather not shuffle roles over a handful of starts.

[/ QUOTE ] Yeah...I dunno, when I watched baseball growing up it seemed that one of the roles the long-relief man in the bullpen was supposed to fill was that of spot starts here and there or for a couple of weeks when someone in the rotation got injured. Maybe I'm remembering this incorrectly or maybe I'm not and this is just something that has changed in baseball over the last 10 years or so... |

Yeah me too ... but when I was a kid they carried 9 or 10 pitchers.

He is just a [censored] journeyman, Park is a shittier journeyman, Sosa desrved the start, thats all there is to it. We are not seasoning Jorge to turn him into the next Juan Marachal. |

And you're acting like a typical caller to WFAN bitching about why the Mets didn't go all out to win one game at the expense of the 161 others. It's a long season. Give Omar a break. He's done a pretty good job. I'm not going to substitute my judgment for his when it comes to player personnel decisions, particularly when he's got about 1000 times the information at his disposal than I have.
