(tl;dr)
Hi. My name is James, I'm 28 (for another 2 weeks), and I live in Tucson. I grew up in Virginia in the DC area and got a degree in computer science from Virginia Tech in '99. While I was in school, I got married. Since she had to live in Blacksburg (beautifule, but middle of nowhere) while I was in school, she got to pick where we'd move when I was finished. That's the short answer for why I'm now living in the desert. During our marriage, I watched as my wife went from being normal, to nearly clinically psychotic (depression + extreme sensitivity + short temper + poor anger management skills = bad), to finally getting her [censored] together and becoming normal again. When she finally settled down on some effective meds, she decided that her life needed a change so she had an affair for a few months and then decided to leave me. I got the memo, literally, when I came home one night after hanging out with some friends. That was 5 years ago. When we got here, I got a job working as a software engineer at a company specializing in optical instrumentation (metrology). After I became single again, I decided to change some things up as well. I sold my house, bought a motorcycle, and quit my job for an opportunity at a start-up company with a few people I used to work with designing and engineering a new type of microscope for medical use (pathology, in particular). I was the 2nd official employee of the company and oversaw the software development group. That job rode me long and hard - 100 hour weeks were the norm for the first 2 years or so. After 4 years I got completely burned out and realized that I don't want to spend the rest of my professional life locked in an office (or worse yet, a cubical) sitting in front of a computer with little to no human contact. So I quit in April and haven't had a job since. What I have done since was decide that I want to change fields and my exposure to the medical community through my latest job encouraged me to try to get into med school. Since the spring, I've been taking community college courses to knock out prerequisite classes that I didn't cover in my CS degree (O-Chem, Bio, etc.). I plan to take the MCAT in the spring and apply next fall. In the meantime, I'm looking for non-software development-related work. I've been playing poker for about 3 years, not counting the kitchen table poker games my family regularly got together. I started off playing live in the local casinos after picking up SSH. I found this site somewhere in that book. I started playing online 2 years ago and did well last year. I'm mainly a SH limit player, but I dabble in NL and O/8 (O/8 especially live). I worked up to 5/10 and then had a horrible summer and decided to take a few months off. I'm now working back up at 3/6. I've only ever deposited money into Neteller once and paid it back as soon as I earned it. Consequently, I've always been in the black playing online poker. I've been in a relationship for about a year and a half. She lives with me now and I've never met someone kinder or easier to talk to. She's exactly what I need. She moved in with me over the summer and things are working out very well. Other misc. tidbits: * I don't know when or where I learned to communicate so extensively in parentheticals, but they're easier to manage than footnotes, so deal with it. * I'm a cat person and always have been. I have 2 now and my girlfriend has 2, so there's no shortage of speedbumps as you walk around my house. * I've been taking a taijutsu class for about 3 months and it's awesome. I'm a 9th kyu though, so that means I can't kick your ass unless you're high. * I have a fantastic group of RL friends who I would have trouble living without. We play live WW every once in a while. * I'm very competitive and love playing just about any sport or game. * I have a sweet 9' pool table but have fallen into the annoying category of people who play less after they invest in a table. * I'm an aetheist (arguably agnostic) and sit left of center politically (in general, fiscally conservative and socially liberal). * I've been sponsoring a Chilean girl through Children International for about 4 years now. * I'm taking a sign language class right now because I thought it would be fun. I was right. Umm, surely nobody's read this far, but, if so, feel free to ask me about anything. |

glad things seem to be working out for you after that setback I think it takes 100xs more to pick yourself back up and rebuild than to build in the first place |

Pistol,
I am not sure how I pictured you, but this wasn't it. I guess I pictured you a little older, married with kids, a couple dogs, and some routine 9-5 job. Anyway, good luck in your career change. I went from a social work career to computers when I was 27. Oh yeah, and GO HOKIES!! (Kyroette is a sophomore at Virginia Tech.) |

[ QUOTE ]
I'm 20 yrs old and live near Minneapolis, MN. After high school I went to college in Fargo, ND/Moorhead, MN for a semester, realized I wasn't ready for it yet and then started dealing poker/blackjack at a casino 75 miles away(http://www.starcasino.com/). After about a year of driving back and forth I deceided that I needed to do something else. That wasn't really leading to anything, and it was a frickin pain to drive 150 miles a day. So I moved back to the Minneapolis area and I now manage a Subway, yes the fast food place, "Eat Fresh" and all that [censored]. I am engaged to the love of my life and am getting married in Aug 2007. I come from a middle class family. I love poker and just gambling in general, I drink from time to time, and love to spend time on the lake or golf course, although I work too much and I can't get out there as much as I want. [/ QUOTE ] Thats about right, I'm still getting married in Aug, still stuck at that damn subway. If anyone else would like to know anthing else about let me know. |
