IMHO it's the golden age of music right now.

You have bands like The Decemberists and The Arcade Fire and Bonnie Prince Billy who are mining traditional music for modern rock. Then you have guys like Beirut and Sufjan Stevens and Gnarls Barkley who are basically one man electronic composers using the power of computers to do really intricate original compositions that are very listenable.
