Is there really an important difference between 500k and 2M?

Really?

Jason,

I know a few people who went to work at GS, Lehman, etc, in both trading and other capacities. One is looking to take a huge paycut to get out of trading and out of NYC after a couple years. Another took a decent paycut to get out of the ibanking grind and do similar, but less stressful, work at a different big corp. in NYC. Most hate the work and like the city.

There's no way to know if you're cut out for the work without doing it. Best of luck.

I'm curious strassa and anyone else, do you think you will be generating any wealth for the world by being a trader? if not, are you ok with that?

Trading is a good opportunity for a poker player. Talk to stoxtrader; he seems to think poker players can be good traders, and could probably tell you some details about his work.

I think poker is great. I plan on graduating with more money than I'll need for the next 20 years, but regardless, I'll end up as either a trader or something similar.

And the great thing is, traders work less than ibankers and the like, so you can still spend weekend afternoons (before you go out and kick it ) playing a few hours of poker. Even at a meager 400-500/hr, you can easily make double your real life salary playing poker 2 days a week. It's a sick thing to think about, but is also gives you a sense of security.

The other great thing is, you're now in a position to buy a real nice apartment or house where you plan on living (New York i'm guessing). You can pay the down payment out of your poker bankroll, invest a good chunk of the rest, and make monthly payments out of your salary+monthly winnings. It'll leave you with plenty of money to add to your investments monthly, which means earlier retirement.

I've thought about this a lot because I'm almost in the exact same situation--about the same age (1 year younger I think) about as successful, with about the same career path in mind (although I plan on starting a business once I get enough in the bank that I'm comfortable quitting my job.)

It is of course a huge difference! For your theory to apply you have to compare much bigger numbers.

Maybe for you. Each dollars you make contributes less to your hapiness then the last one.

IMO the jump between making $1,000 and $100,000 is much bigger then the jump between $100,000 and $10,000,000.

What you say is correct but it doesnt contradict my statement which I think is true for most people.
