People are totally not understanding this. This is not shortsighted at all. The total prize pool for all the freerolls is going to be well into the seven figures. That's going to lead to some nice looking press releases that will attract a lot of new players.
It's not a horrible idea. Skimming some money from the high volume players for advertising and to redistribute somewhat randomly amongst the player base is good for them. Their execution leaves a lot to be desired though. They're going a little overboard with the extra psuedorake. Making the freeroll purses 20% bigger isn't really going to have much of an effect except to piss off high volume players. |

I went through everything they have on the promotion and still don't understand it completely. I am not sure how the offline monthly qualifiers fit in, but given the exotic locations and the fact that nine professionals will compete with nine online qualifiers, my best guess is that television will be involved. The final big event will be held in Rio with a prize pool of $5 million + a portion of 8 months worth of rake. I'm guessing that event will also be televised.
They wanted to do a huge freeroll tourney to promote their web site, but decided to supplement the prize pool with rake from their cash games. With the recent WSOP ME prize pools, a $5 million tourney just wouldn't generate enough interest. If the prize pool were $20 million (any ballpark estimates on how big it gets?) then they would get the exposure they seek. In the end, they are supplementing their marketing budget by taking more money from their winning players. |

Assuming you lose every pot you play, then technically it won't cost an extra cent, so.... [/ QUOTE ] I am wondering if they somehow think that since they don't take an administration fee that it is free. Wierd kind of logic, but you never know. |

[ QUOTE ] i don't think 50 cents a pop will really doom anyone [/ QUOTE ] Like I said, this would cost me $24K/year at 40.7K hands/month. [/ QUOTE ] Not if you won one (or more) of the freerolls |

I am a logical thinker and not one to jump on the "OMG internet poker is going to get banned" bandwagon but seriously, what are the chances that this structure (someone stated until june 2007) is due to the uncertainty of the legality of the game and the fact that PartyGaming may want to "get in their share of the rake" while all of the US players can still play?
