I don't think it's that simple. People say one thing but do another, vocal minorities, blah blah blah.

That's why we need to do a poll instead of this trainwreck

I don't go to OOT much, but I'd be all up ons A&E.

i deliberately avoided making it a poll because i thought it was obvious that most people in oot would oppose the split. the important thing was to allow people to reason out why they opposed it, in a thread where people would listen to them. when you do something like add numbers to the mix, people will tend to vote without talking, or say stuff like "88% oppose nuff said."

i don't think this open discussion is a trainwreck, but short of a few points i have found it pretty disappointing.

It's more than just "oppose or support"...it also includes what would happen if A&E split and if the reasoning behind it is sound which I think is important (and also reflected in this thread).

however good it may be, it's still made up of a small list of options that you selected. i was not comfortable deciding for myself what options people might want. maybe we'll all look back and say as you do now that this thread didn't turn out so well, but if so, whose fault is that? it wasn't a trainwreck by design.

This turned into an attempt to quarentine the NSFW/relationship/talk about myspace whores content in it's own forum. Once that didn't fly, the next step was "let's move the stuff we like about oot out of oot so that we can ignore the yucky parts of oot".

[/ QUOTE ]

excellent summary

I'm saying you are about to make a huge decision that affects hundreds of people and you need to base it more on quantitative data than the opinion of 3 people. Replace my poll if you want but the numbers are already showing that:

1) the majority of people do not want the split
2) the majority of people think there is an adequate A&Ether topics ratio in OOT
3) the majority of people think that, even if entertainment is being overshadowed that the strong threads will come to the top and weak threads will die (a la Kingpin)
4) MOST IMPORTANTLY, if this change happens the majority of people will either post less in both OOT and A&E or post somewhat frequently/frequently in OOT and not very much at all in A&E

i would just like to reiterate how lame i think it is whining about threads not getting the 'exposure' that the posters would like.

if i wrote lengthy reviews of Pez dispensers twice a week, and they received few responses and were knocked pages back, why would i cry about it?

perhaps the exposure i desire could easily be found by posting my threads/content in a completely different pez-centric forum or website.

i'm not a fan of the split...when i want serious film discussions, i go to film forums, where i have close to double the posts that i do on 2+2...when i want to talk poker, i go to the STT forum...when i want to talk sports, i go to a sports website...but this is the only off-topic forum i visit regularly because it just has a great mix of good and absurd topics...and it has that critical mass...i enjoy an OT forum on the film website, but there are maybe 30 regular posters there, whereas there are 100s here...that's why this is my OT forum of choice...

i'm ok with there being a forum for just serious discussions/reviews of film/music/tv...but only if it's limited to serious discussions...i'd go there then as well when i wanna seriously discuss film/music/tv...but when i wanna talk about jack bauer vs chuck norris or how many good shows FOX cancels each year or what the best music video of 1997 was...i'd rather do it in OOT

one alternative is a sticky that links to all of the review threads...db/pryor/etc can write their reviews as they do now in OOT...a mod can then place a link to that thread in the stickied reviews thread...so when people wanna read serious reviews without going to a film/tv-oriented website, they can just look there...and when they wanna be less serious, they can browse OOT as normal

but a split is ok, IF and only IF, it's split by seriousness level...any silly a&e topics or polls should be in OOT

i think you're playing into their hands with comments like these.

2+2 would rather start their own pez forum than see you go to another site.
