fnord,

"why did they not lobby against the legislation?"

1 What makes you sure they haven't lobbied against it?

2 As for trading in the stock, it is most definitely very possible and completely legal to do so in the US. I know a number of people who made a ton shorting Party.

1. I don't know, I'm just cavalierly speculating that they didn't put a lot of effort into it, based on the most anecdotal of evidence (2+2 is where I am getting about all of my news on this subject, scary).
2. Sweet!

Such a brilliant hedge actually. If you're a successful online mid/high-limit player, I imaging you could've made maybe a year's worth of income buying PRTY.L puts for risking about a weeks worth of income.

It was a v. obvious short and i wish i'd had the capital to do so. However, i am under the impression that here you can only "bet" on the stock price, not actually own the shares, you'd have to go through a british broker to do so.

I dont think its too hard to trade UK stocks if your using a major broker. You probably just have to make a few phone calls and get approval.
Damn i think someone had a news story where they said Frist was on a "jihad" to ban online gambling i should have thought of it.

A lot of people seem to forget that just because you pull out of the US market does not mean you can never come back.

New administrations come and go along with the representatives in Congress. To lose all hope that sites such as Party Poker and Pacific will not come back at all is absurd. For all we know, these sites could be pulling out waiting for the whole issue to die down before getting back in again.

All we know is that Poker Stars hasn't made a decision yet and they probably won't until the bill is signed. At that point, they'll either find some way to fight it or submit to it and do what's best from there. If they pull out of the US market, I'm sure they have a reason far better than "LOL WE GONNA SCREW THEM AMERICANS!"

If Stars pulls out, then I accept that as such. They probably had a good reason to do it. I won't hate Stars if they do pull out. However, they won't have my business if they come back. I'll have a bankroll elsewhere by then.

Bob, imagine the fish saying this, only some of them say "Bah, I think I'm done with this online poker thing." That's a big part of the reason we're freaking out about the biggest site jumping ship and the 2nd biggest thinking about it.

The live ones will swim in other waters. I'll play against them there. I bet most of them don't even know that this bill exists in the first place.

If Stars was going to stay, they would have said so by now.

Bush could sign the law any day, they would have to have a decision made by then. Hell, he could sign it in 8 hours. Why would they wait till Bush signs the law to say, "hey we're going to stay"

Makes no sense, there's no reason to wait to release a statement except to wait to say goodbye.
