I've been having success doing what you said earlier, focusing on something in the girl's profile and trying to stand out. Standing out is pretty simple, as long as you don't say something similar to "OMG your pics are so hot and Im desperate will you have sex with me please?" you'll probably stand out. I just don't see the point of this confusing first message stuff.
