With a pot of that size, he pretty much had outs to draw, especially considering his hand is already good a portion of the time.

These 2 hands are good examples of borderline situations. I think in hand 1, it's really tough but a fold is probably correct. I think hand 2 was probably fine. we have 4-ish outs, + we're already good sometimes.

uh he hit 2pair on the river

and HU on a 3flush board without heavy action, you can for the most part forget flushes, oversimplifing some but playing scared HU is a bad thing
