I just watched Primer and am utterly confused.. I have never watched a movie where I didn't get the entire thing. As in absolutely no clue what I just watched.. Last time I felt like this was Mulholland Drive, but even then I could somewhat follow it.
I'm going to read up on it online, give up on trying to understand the dialogue that seems like its above 99% of the general population and give it a 2nd chance sometime in the near future. |

[ QUOTE ] Maybe I'm just a sucker for baby bears or something, I don't know. But that kinda pissed me off and creeped me out. Maybe if I watch it again, I'll change my mind. I think I may have this one in storage somewhere, but if not, I'll give it another look. [/ QUOTE ] i was pissed, too, as evidenced by my original post. try to watch it again. i'm interested to see if you'll come aboard. [/ QUOTE ] Am I not watching the same movie as everyone else?? The guys werent 'hunters' they were fishing. And they were throwing rocks around the bear and making movements to scare the bear away. They were doing the things that you're supposed to do to make bears go away so...THEY DONT EAT YOU. Timothy may have had good intentions and loved the bears, but he was insane and his way of going about 'saving' them wasnt helping at all. It's no wonder he got eaten by one. He stayed WAY past the time he should have. And his feeling the poop that the bear left? C'mon guys... It's a tragedy what happened to him, but it's his own fault. They're wild animals and thinking you can just go into the wilderness and talk to them because you love them so much...he was an idiot. |

This is a classic example of something that should be in the Darwin Awards. This guy deserved to be eaten and from what I remember reading about him he at one time stated that it would be an honor to be eaten by bears. Guess he just got his wish. |

Saw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles today...
Very well put together, and will be added to my movie collection once it comes out on DVD. "After the defeat of their old arch nemesis, The Shredder, the Turtles have grown apart as a family. Struggling to keep them together, their rat sensei, Master Splinter, becomes worried when strange things begin to brew in New York City. Tech-industrialist Max Winters is amassing an army of ancient monsters to apparently take over the world. And only one super-ninja fighting team can stop them—those heroes in a half shell—Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael! With the help of old allies April O'Neil and Casey Jones, the Turtles are in for the fight of their lives as they once again must face the mysterious Foot Clan, who have put their own ninja skills behind Winters' endeavors"

West of Zanzibar – 1928
Staring – Lon Chaney, Lionel Barrymore Directed by – Tod Browning ![]() Finally got a chance to catch this on TCM yesterday. The second Lon Chaney/Tod Browning collaboration. West of Zanzibar tells the story of a magician whose wife is stolen away by an ivory trader. Chaney’s character suffers a fall in the initial dispute with the man (Lionel Barrymore) and ends up paralyzed from the waist down. Chaney’s character then spends the next 17 years of his life plotting his revenge against his wife’s lover, including traveling to Africa and running a trading post to be near the man. Bizzare plot? Yes, but what did you expect, it’s a Chaney/Browning film. Chaney’s acting to great as always, especially his physical acting. You actually believe that the man is paralyzed when you watch him move around. There is a shot where Chaney climbs down a rope to the floor and then crawls to a wheelchair and pulls himself up into it – incredible acting. This movie is dark and creepy, mainly for Chaney’s bizarre twisted character, who cares for no one. I wouldn’t call it Chaney’s best film, but still one of his best acted films. Definitely worth a watch at just a little over 60 minutes. |

I love looking up old movies to see if I can find a forgotten treasure. Especially the horror/film noir ones. A lot of the old B movies were really good, and a lot of them seem much better movies than our A movies of today.

From the odd double bills catagory:
On The Waterfront For me this one doesn't hold up as much as I thought it would. The acting is still top notch and there are some very good moments, but much of the writing seems poorly contrived. How the hell does Eva Marie Saint end up in the hold of that ship after the "accident"? What makes Johnny Friendly think Brando will be able to infiltrate the church meeting? And why when he does, do they then go and beat everyone up anyhow? Whatever. Still worth the rewatch just to see Brando at the top of his game. Repulsion If you've seen this you know how unforgettable it is. Imagine then my surprise when thinking I was watching it for the first time, pieces started to come back to me. My only explanation is that I must have seen a fragment of it on tv at one point without realizing what I was watching. In any event it is just plain brilliant. Polanski and Deneuve achieve so much with so little. It's amazing how little audio there is for so much of this film. Huge chunks are just the sound of a ticking clock or a dog barking in the distance or muted street noises. Meanwhile the video is very dark black and white. Having also just watched Straw Dogs for the DVD club it was an interesting contrast of rape scenes. But we'll save that for next Friday. |
