[ QUOTE ]
I was just watching Game 6 of the 2002 World Series on ESPN Classic and was reminded why Tim McCarver is an idiot. Bottom of the 8th inning: Angels lead 6-5, runners on first and second, one out, and Jose Molina at the plate facing Robb Nen Molina squares to bunt and fouls it off. Cue the moron: "That is a bad play in any situation. In ANY situation." He was referring to sacrifice bunting with runners at first and second and one out. Ummm...wow. This is such a ridiculous statement. In my view, that was a perfect time for a sacrifice. 1) Jose Molina is not a prolific hitter. He's a backup catcher. 2) Robb Nen was one of the most dominant closers in the game at that time. 3) Adam Kennedy, who was scorching hot that postseason, was on deck. He would be followed by the top of the Angels' order. What's the problem here? The Molina brothers are some of the slowest human beings in professional sports. If Jose hits a groundball there, it's an inning-ending double play. Wouldn't you rather have him make a productive out and let one of your hottest hitters bat with two runners in scoring position? It seems perfectly logical to me. I'm not saying it was a must-bunt situation, but for McCarver to say bunting in that case is always a bad play was completely asinine. If this example wasn't good enough, what if it's a National League game and your pitcher is batting with one out and runners on first and second? In summary, Tim McCarver is dumb. [/ QUOTE ] I agree, its not stupid in ANY situation. Like if the hitter is a .000 hitter. Otherwise, yeah its pretty terrible. |

In the Virginia/Maryland game Saturday night, the Virginia QB threw a ball into traffic which was defended by a defensive back. Very well could have been intercepted.
Announcer: "Virginia is very fortunate that wasn't intercepted." Really? Thanks for the insight. |

Hollywade,
That is one the few spots were Tim McCarver isn't a blithering idiot. All from todays MMQB by Peter King [ QUOTE ] 3. Tony Romo, QB, Dallas. Is it my imagination, or does Romo lead the league in smiling? [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] 4. Brett Favre, QB, Green Bay. On his bye Sunday, Favre did not chart any passes. My guess is he spent a long time cutting the grass, edging the front lawn where it meets the state highway in front of his house in Mississippi, then, for fun, watching the History Channel until he fell asleep. [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] The Indians crew was furious about Dana DeMuth's strike zone and how it contributed to the horrid night of Fausto Carmona. Never heard an anti-ump word from the Red Sox guys; big surprise there. Jon Miller and Joe Morgan had a middle-of-the-road, enthusiastic, educated view of the proceedings. Listening to the game, I felt like an 8-year-old kid with the transistor under my pillow late at night while growing up in northern Connecticut. [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I told Mary Beth last Friday, The Office might be better than Seinfeld. That sounds crazy, but every character is perfect.' ' [/ QUOTE ] |

Sure it might be an obvious comment but come on... You're just nitpicking here. Would you also get mad if they said the score or how much time was left if it was also displayed on the screen? They're getting paid to talk, they have to say something, however obvious it may be. |

"Fenway Park is literally shaking." [/ QUOTE ] I take it you've never seen a live baseball game in a packed stadium? The structures do literally shake sometimes. The crowd stops their feet and the concrete shakes - particularily if you are in the raised part of the stadium as the announcers always are. |
