i disagree. in both systems it costs you the same, but clearly it affects the driver unequally. stiffing a driver entirely makes a huge difference to the driver in one system and has a very small effect in another. relatedly, if waitress wages went up to $7/hr it would be reasonable to have nyc standard tips go back below 20% [/ QUOTE ] Tipping less puts an upward pressure on wages. But paying higher wages doesnt put a downward pressure on tipping habits, because consumers generally dont know how much the employees are getting paid. Which is why wages in the service industry are relatively low, and why governments dont enforce min wage laws for service related jobs. For jobs like driving cabs, a better system needs to be worked out. With GPS technology as it is, there's no reason why fares cant be completely standardized and made into flat fees. And with that, you can raise the base wages of the cabbies and eliminate tipping, which would be in everyones best interest (except people who dont tip). |

Cab drivers can shove it if they want to complain about there tips. Thats what happens when you work in a "no skill" job. cabbies are lucky that society even deems there job tip worthy. ill give about two bucks for a cab ride anywhere on the strip. if i take a longer ride like airport to my house and the cabbie/limodriver/ shuttle driver is polite and gets my bags for me he gets 5-10. if a cabbie(or someone in any service industry posistion) complains about tips they get absolutly nothing.
im shocked at these stories where the cabbie gets a $2 tip for 5 min cab ride and then complains about it. if they did that to me, id tip nothing and get all my change back down to the last penny. on a side note ive been working on an ambulance as an emt for the last two years. ive saved people lives, taken care of drunks, drug addicts, andcomplete [censored] psychos. ive been bleed on, puked on, punched in the face, and bitten. ive had to lift 400lb fat asses down stairs, and naked people covered in there own fecal matter. the hours were long but thats ok because the pay sucked.i made barely over minimum wage, and worked 80 hrs a week to make ends meets. i didn't bitch at my patients about how little i made because it was the job i choose. its unprofessional, and frankly people dont give a [censored]. i made what the market would bare. so i dont got much sympathy for cabbies who dont even have to get out of there damn cab, drive ten minutes, and get $2 for doing jack [censored] anyway. BTW Ilike what Mr. Pink had to say: Nice Guy Eddie: C'mon, throw in a buck! Mr. Pink: Uh-uh, I don't tip. Nice Guy Eddie: You don't tip? Mr. Pink: Nah, I don't believe in it. Nice Guy Eddie: You don't believe in tipping? Mr. Blue: You know what these chicks make? They make [censored]. Mr. Pink: Don't give me that. She don't make enough money that she can quit. Nice Guy Eddie: I don't even know a [censored] Jew who'd have the balls to say that. Let me get this straight: you don't ever tip? Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job. "I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's [censored] up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government [censored] in the ass on a regular basis. Look, if you ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And as for this non-college [censored] I got two words for that: learn to [censored]' type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big [censored]' surprise." |

[/ QUOTE ] You're an ass (whether or not you're an actual cabbie in LV). A $6 cab ride should get more than a 25% tip????? Gimme a goddam break. It's not like the guy got a $38.50 cab ride and left the cabbie with $40 - that would be a shaft. How long does a $6 cab ride last? 4 minutes? Yeah that should be worth like a 70% tip (rolls eyes). |
