[ QUOTE ]
I think there should be 2 DH's, so those all-hit no-glove shortstops don't have to bat. [/ QUOTE ] Might as well allow 9 DH's then. I remember the good old days of the 1986 Mets, where they basically had a bunch of DH's (Strawberry, Howard Johnson, Kevin Mitchell) playing the field. Put your best 9 hitters in the game, put your best 9 fielders in the game. If they overlap, so be it, but otherwise let's see the best guys out there. Should also give a bunch of all-hit/no-field minor leaguers more jobs if they expand the rosters. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Agreed, the DH just dumbs the game down a little bit. I'm fine with the AL keeping it, but don't even start with the NL. [/ QUOTE ] How can you be fine with the AL keeping it, yet be so opposed to the NL adopting it? [/ QUOTE ] Because 'my' team is an NL team, so I am a fan of the NL, watch the NL most often, etc. Its like saying I think the Dish network sucks but I don't care if my neighbors use it. [/ QUOTE ] Fair enough |

OK, my take.
It's an abomination, and I hate it. I hate that it creates players that strictly play on offense (DH's) and defense (pitchers). This is baseball, not football. I hate that it takes away double switches, pinch hit situations, and crucial late game decisions about pulling your pitcher. I hate that pitchers can throw at guys carte blanche and not have to face opposing pitchers who can throw at them. I hate that sluggers can get lazy and out of shape, but still demand top salaries because they can swing the bat and not be a defensive liability. I hate that many little leagues have the rule, and some kids never get the opportunity to bat. I hate when they muck with the rules to try and generate offense because some fans get "bored" with lower scoring games. Baseball was healthier (and better IMHO) before DH's, juiced balls and steroids. I know I am older (40+) than most here and prefer the "pure" game, and perhaps I am in the minority, but I hate the DH. Flame away. |

Mano,
While I disagree with your opinion, (like I've said I like the DH), you made a very good argument about why you don't like it with valid opinions. Definitely a good, flame-proof post. [ QUOTE ] I hate that many little leagues have the rule, and some kids never get the opportunity to bat. [/ QUOTE ] I never thought about that, that's an excellent point. |

[/ QUOTE ] I didn't get to bat when I was on the varsity baseball team in high school because my stupid coach didn't let pitchers hit. Well, I did get to bat once and somehow, despite my horrible bat speed that resulted from zero batting practice in two years, I hit a line drive single to right. [ QUOTE ] There's so little strategy anyway. Matter of fact, I can argue it enhances the relevant strategy. [/ QUOTE ] Ok, go for it. [/ QUOTE ] The relevant strategy is the mano e mano battle between hitter and pitcher. We're losing that nearly 10% of the time in the NL. Another huge positive for the DH is it keeps star players around much longer than they would have been otherwise. Think Jim Thome, Frank Thomas..etc. The game is better because Frank Thomas can still do what he does best, which is hit, while nobody has to watch him field. My solution is to make the body armour a requirement for all players and add the DH to the NL. |
