i think the reasonable thing to have done would have been to lock your stuff up and gone and worked out. the weird thing would have been to "bust the [censored] out of there" based on being alone w/ one other guy in a locker room.
ive been in the locker room w/ one other guy a lot. if i split every time this happened, i probably wouldnt get many workouts done. the thing to do is take reasonable precautions and go on with your life. sarcastically calling the guy an Einstein seems unnecessary. |

then would crack the lock while they were working out. But here's the thing: the thief would only remove a single credit card and then lock the locker, [/ QUOTE ] They would actually pick the lock? OP: I think it was totally reasonable for the guy to lock up his stuff and go work out. |

Lots of break-ins in the lot over the years regardless, no doubt because thieves camp in a car and watch people go in - if they're not carrying valuables such as wallet, phone, etc. they can guess they're in the vehicle. [/ QUOTE ] Expert strategy ldo. |

[ QUOTE ] Also, lol at you fleeing in a panic. Just lock your stuff up, then go work out. duh. [/ QUOTE ] Noah, do you eat yogurt for breakfast, because you and The Most Irritating Co-worker in History seem to think a lot alike? It had a padlock of some sort on it, which was cut with a bolt cutter. lawl....40 oz of St. Ides [/ QUOTE ] from the op: "it's time to bust the [censored] out of there." you're the one making it sound like the guy is gonna rape you or set you on fire or something. the sense of urgency you are conveying is a bit ridiculous. I lock my stuff up and if I'm being super paranoid, I leave my wallet in my pocket and just lock up my clothes. You make it sound like you'd dash out of their in your underwear because OMG DANGER WILL ROBINSON! |

[ QUOTE ] then would crack the lock while they were working out. But here's the thing: the thief would only remove a single credit card and then lock the locker, [/ QUOTE ] They would actually pick the lock? [/ QUOTE ] I think this is more common knowledge now (may even be in a link posted upthread) but the very popular Master combination locks could apparently be picked by some sort of magnetic device. I think I was also told that the older they are, the easier they are to pick. So the guy could run the cracker over the lock, open it, and lock it again without the gym member being any the wiser. Plus it would probably look to a casual passerby that the thief wasn't doing anything too out of the ordinary, thus not attracting attention. After that happened, I noticed that around 90% of the locks in our locker room were the classic Master lock variety, so I went for something more heavy duty. Also, one time some guy that I guess was a meth head or something broke into a friend's locker and took his keys and stuff. Friend figured it out pretty quickly and went out to the parking lot only to find meth head wandering aimlessly around the lot clicking unlock on the keyless entry in an attempt to find the vehicle. My friend, a pacifist by nature, declined to press charges because he didn't get away. |

[/ QUOTE ] hey dillhole, i know he put a lock on the locker. although you failed to put that significant piece of info in your OP, i had read your other posts in the thread before replying. putting a lock on your locker is a reasonable expectation of security in a gym. if you have a heightened sense of security as noah said bring your wallet w/ you. if your name is 27offsuit every time you sense someone standing too close to you strip naked and yell rape to draw attention to you and draw the perp away. it's about reasonable measures. it's not about acting like you have 20/20 hindsite and calling people idiots because they didnt act like you claim you would have acted. |

I don't expect some shady-looking dude to be walking around with a pair of bolt cutters tucked in his pants...While I would find the situation a little unsettling, I wouldn't think twice about locking all my stuff up.
Are you really arguing that your co-worker is an idiot for not assuming this guy had a pair of bolt cutters and was ready to cut through his lock as soon as he left the locker room? That is just stupid. |
