"the best way to improve results will always be to surround yourself with retards. not, mediocre tags or spewy lags. find legitimate uber fish. only play at tables with multiple monkeys."

I cannot even begin to express how much I agree with these words. But the interesting part is not that I agree with them, but rather that so many players still dont understand how important these words truly are.

Once you know the fundamentals, the vast majority of your results is going to be decided by table/seat selection.

Whether someone plays poker, invests in common stocks, plays blackjack or bets on sports, before they wager a cent of their money they better be able to accurately assess their edge becuz in the end thats what it all comes down to: Your edge. If you have a large edge you invest/wager your money. If you dont have an edge you dont play. Its that simple.

When I play poker or invest in stocks. I dont look for small edges. Those kind of edges dont interest me. I only look for large edges. If I dont have a strong advantage I'll go watch a movie or something. Put another way, If I had the choice between a 15/30 game with a small edge or a 3-6 game with a large edge I'll take the 3-6 game every time. No that last part may not be completely rational since it can very well be the case that my theoretical earn will be higher in a 15-30 game with a small edge than a 3-6 game with a large edge, but nevertheless thats how I approach the game. For me its all about edge.

"For me it's all a matter of money not bb/100. If I can make decent money on RB+bonus then I don't care what my bb/100 is. "Although it would help my ego""

well i said nothing of the sort. however, you should realize that 2bb/100 is exponentially (not linearly) better than .5bb/100.

[/ QUOTE ]

Sorry, didn't mean to put words into your mouth but I don't get this. If I'm a .5 player and make 1.5 in bonus + RB how is making 2BB/100 at an easy site that doesn't have bonus + RB making me any more money?

OK, you got me there. I was all set to figure out what I made over the last 5k hands and "prove" I was right. But now that I think of the last few days whining to my wife about how I hated poker and wish I didn't suck I can see your point.

Are you a better poker player today then you were yesterday?

[/ QUOTE ]

Absolutely not. Worse, for sure, because I keep trying new things with no real idea of how or why they might work out, and then I get all confused and spewy.

How do you go about getting better? Seriously, I just have no idea. I do the following:

1) read and post here, and I think I do that reasonably well
2) read books
3) review my hands and try to identify leaks

but my big problem is that I am really bad at taking things I've considered away from the table and putting them into action. I don't recognise patterns and playing styles well. I am much worse than others here at predicting how opponents will react to my plays, or reading hands.

I think I might just not be cut out for poker, which after eight years of consistent winning is a very odd conclusion to draw; but it's what I always expected in fact.

Guy.

Man, don't throw 8 years down the drain. Maybe you just need to do what Victor said and just surround yourself with morons. Maybe I need to do this too. I do basically the same as you and have the same attitude at times. Hell I had that attitude this morning. Maybe just go back to the things that you used to do well and play against idiots. I remember when I first played online it was on Pacific in 2003 and I just played Lee Jones style and did well. The reason I did well is because Pacific had tons of fish. Maybe I need to find a new fish pond instead of worrying about the bonii and just go back to what I know. "Value bet the fish" was a pretty easy way to win then and I got a feeling it is now. Just have to find the fish again.

Well itīs still possible to calculate how much rake you pay at average over 100/hands and how many BB/100 your rakeback is worth.
On the sites I play my 30% rakeback is worth about 1 BB/100 so I would guess that WSEX rakeback is worth about 2.7 BB/100.
So you have to have a winrate of 1.7 BB/100 at my sites to compensate WSEX rakeback. So it makes sense to still play at WSEX under those circumstances.
Especially since the rakeback is a guaranteed income.
