Im going to go against the grain here, I would be fairly pissed. the only upside is that the boss is giving you 3 weeks notice I think you said, so thats cool, but a schedule is a schedule, and if you worked 4 years w/o working a saturday, then all of a sudden, you were demanded to work, that would suck, so most likely Id use show up to work, but not do much. I really wouldnt say anything negative though to anyone ASU, imo, it is the things like this that bosses really remember and can screw over an otherwise decent employee.

Just to be clear, are you going to have to go in to help move stuff? I'm guessing that's not even remotely close to your actual job, right?

I don't know what "set up desk" means but it doesn't sound like something I'd want to do.

don't know where you're located.

i have employees; and its fairly common that they are required to work overtime or nights or weekends to keep up with production.

if they have real conflicts that prevent this; and they are raised in a reasonable manner; i will try to work with them if I can (which just means one of their co workers will have to work in their place).

if they blatantly refuse...or if they were saying "i don't work weekends", i would probably end up firing them and replacing them...hourly employees are easily replaced.

yes; i'm probably an ass.

but sometimes workers are required to go above and beyond their weekly job requirements...its a fact of life if you want to excel in your job.

by the way..based on your perspective, OP; i'm guessing you're about 23?

(just wanted to add
when i was younger (i'm 36 now), i would not have been happy about this...would have bitched and moaned...would have thought it was unfair...etc.

so i do see where you are coming from; but your boss has responsibilities...and its his job to use his resources (you) to get moved on time with no extra down time.

Ah TY this is how I feel. For the record this isn't something I'm willing to lose my job over. I just was wondering if it's legal. I'm pretty pissed cause I had plans to leave town that I have to cancel. I'm not going to cause a stir around the office, but it's still b.s.

Don't you get personal days or vacation days? Just take one and then you can leave town a day earlier.

No we have a moving company. I don't really know what it means. He said we leave when we're 100% operational. So since 1/2 the people here are not computer savy at all, i'm sure it means i'll be setting up everything system in addition to my own. I'm not really looking forward to it.

I can't believe this post has come this far without anyone coming up with the easy answer.

Tell him you are a jew and can't work on the Sabbath.

if you had plans to leave town...have you considered asking to speak to your boss privately...

by the way: this seems sketchy cause didn't you say you weren't sure what weekend it was yet?

and saying :

"i see that this is important; but I already have plans to travel that weekend... is there any way for me to avoid having to change my plans?"

He's been there 4 years and I bet he has worked on a few Yom Kippurs.

I said CA in my OP. I'm not going to refuse and I may be hourly, but i'm not exactly replaceable. I've trained so many people in this office it's redic, i'm a pretty important piece of the pie. I'm 27 BTW, but don't know being curious about labor law or irritated about being inconvenienced really is a reflection of my age.
