For everyone ragging on Gildwulf, this no racism policy is a 2+2 policy. It's likely the admins had a little talk with GW and told him to do it. As the self-appointed 2+2 racism expert, I'm surprised this wasn't obvious before. You're not going to get away with making racist comments.

i think the problem is dudes that people that are actually racist can just spew vitriol under the guise of being "ironic" (a la greenfield)

I think that evaluating the context is important here. For example, Banning Greefield for blatently racist insults = A++ move. Where as banning people for suggesting the NIGGAPLZFOLD2 screenname would not be.
