Yup, have a feeling USA is turning into China, when everyone was expecting the opposite. communism is about control.
- denying your adulthood regarding gambling <font color="red"> no "turning into here", prohibition and other "victimless crimes"</font>
- recording your phone calls, emails, <font color="red">never happened, isnt happening </font>
- spying over press and jounalists, <font color="red"> never happened, isnt happening </font>
- even revealing those who gave their life to the country but still dare to ask (chaney-libby), <font color="red"> her lying husband and herself revealed her role at the CIA long before Novak did, at parties no less </font>
- constantly calling attention about being in a war and that enemy is everywhere, hiding and just waiting for his opportunity to attack... <font color="red"> huh? </font>
- putting people in prison without accusation, refusing them any contacts, lawyers, denying any visit of human rights activists, red cross,... <font color="red"> the red cross hasnt been denied access to anyone, and has onsite observers at all prisons, not finding any violations of human rights. we'll just debunk the big one in a list of lies </font>

where is all this leading? <font color="red">good question...where does it lead when so many people in a democracy dont think for themselves enough to distinguish between progoganda and truth </font>

Copernicus,

If you search the forums far enough back, you'll see that I issued challenge for anyone to tell me how the how the Partriot Act limited their freedoms or curtailed our civil rights. As you can imagine, I have yet to have someone make the case.

Ive done the same...to the same deafening silence.

you might google around all those <font color="red">never happened, isnt happening </font>.

and google about patriot act too. under that legislation, your goverment can:
1. search your home and not even tell you
2. collect info about what books you read, what you study, your purchases and your medical history (=spying; no more confidential coversations with your doctor, lawyer or priest)
3. seize a wide variety of business and financial records
4. read your emails and look what sites you are visiting online.

but i guess you're right, partriot act did not limit your freedoms or curtailed your civil rights.

OMG.....ROFL
What are you trying to justify to yourselves? Ignorance is bliss I guess. LOL. I'm not a good debater by any means, but anyone who doesn't think "democracy" is this country isn't in jeapordy, is blinded by some need to justify your beliefs in your own twisted, personal, political agenda.

Then why don't you inform us to as how democracy is in trouble?

For extra credit, why is democracy such a good idea?

i heard the theory once that political systems (democracy, communism, monarchy, etc) are sort of in a circle and that if you go far enough to the left it'll end up as a far-right system, and vice versa. for example extreme communism (left) and totalitarianism (right) have had a lot of similarities in history. i think the usa right now is shifting more to the right than the left but we're not communist/fascist just yet. you can have a corrupt administration without a full-scale political shift though.

Maybe I'm one of these simple folks but I don't see how this reflects a movement towards adopting communism in the U.S.

Communism

Communism is a political ideology that seeks to establish a future classless, stateless social organization based upon common ownership of the means of production and the absence of private property. It can be classified as a branch of the broader socialist movement. Communism also refers to a variety of political movements which claim the establishment of such a social organization as their ultimate goal.

Your implication to me is that the current administration is promoting the business of oil companies to the detriment of its citizenry. If I'm right about what your claiming then this IMO this doesn't add up to a move toward communism.

I one could argue that the recent Kelo decision is a move in the direction of communism:

Kelo v. City of New London

Seems like it's getting less communistic to me.

That would be my take as well. If we're discussing whether or not the U.S. is moving more in the direction of Communism then I think the passage you cited would dispell that notion not support it. I supect though that this isn't a thread about whether or not the U.S. is moving towards a communist state.

Step #1
Place an oil lobbyist as the chief of staff for the White House Council on Environmental Quality. Have him edit the work of scientists. Anything regarding climate change must be heavily edited.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4075986.stm

Step #2
Suppress the voice of scientists - Hansen, who heads NASA's Goddard Institute, is highly respected by just about EVERY SCIENTIST ON THE PLANET.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/...n1415985.shtml

Step #3
"Eliminat[e] virtually all scientific research funded by NASA" &lt;--- Quote from Congressman John Culberson, cosigned by many Senators and congressmen.
http://www.space.com/media/pdf/culberson_letter.pdf

Step #4
Remove the part in bold from NASA's motto “To understand and protect our home planet; to explore the universe and search for life; to inspire the next generation of explorers ... as only NASA can.”

FYI: I left out a lot of steps to keep this simple for the "plain" folk.

I agree communism isn't the best choice of words. I should of used totalitarian. However, I hope you can see the similarities between this behavior and China's behavior. China is well known for sensoring the internet and jailing people who say things it doesn't like. China is also known for erasing events from textbooks like the Tiananmen massacre. Is that clear enough adios? If now what word do you think I should of used?
